The Laura Ashley Hotel The Belsfield overlooks Lake Windermere in the popular Lakeland town of Bowness-on-Windermere. It was built in 1845 for a European aristocrat -- 170 years later it's been refurbished in partnership with Laura Ashley. Expect elegant furnishings, lush fabrics, grand chandeliers and classic designs combined with modern features such as a glass reception area and an indoor pool.

There are two restaurants, including the Belsfield Restaurant -- which has views of Lake Windermere -- and the Brasserie, both serve traditional British dishes. Dinner is served in the Brasserie, we like the sound of the Lancashire lamb hotpot with braised red cabbage. There's also an extensive wine list with wines hand-picked by the hotel's buying experts. Guests can have drinks in the Lounge Bar and Drawing Room.

The hotel has 62 bedrooms, each with underfloor heating in the bathrooms, Laura Ashley bathroom products, luxury pillows, Egyptian cotton linens and a jar of local sweets. Wi-Fi is free in all rooms, and most have views of Lake Windermere.

There's plenty to do in Bowness-on-Windermere, such as The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, which is a 4-minute walk from the hotel, and there are numerous shops in the town centre. The Lakeland Motor Museum is eight miles away.

Alternatively, get a boat from Bowness Pier, opposite the hotel, to Lakeside or Ambleside, or drive to other Lakeland towns like Hawkshead and Grasmere. Hawkshead is particularly special as it's a car-free zone. It's described by Lonely Planet as "a jumble of whitewashed cottages, cobbled lanes and old pubs" and was where poet William Wordsworth went to school.

  • "Like stepping into a painting" -- The Guardian
  • "Classic British elegance inside, with wonderful views of the Lake District National Park visible from virtually every window" -- The Star (Sheffield)

The pool wasn't in use (no mention of this online- we specifically booked a hotel with pool). The room we were given was next to the bins and noisy so we asked to move and were told we could pay £40 to be upgraded to lake view but there were roadworks in front of us making noise all night into early morning. Shower temp control did not work so at 10pm member of staff came up to see if he could help but there was nothing he could do until the morning. We were told because of this fault that they would waive the £40 upgrade fee. Breakfast was a buffet and not very good quality and the waiter forgot to bring our coffee and toast. On checkout the receptionist asked for the £40 upgrade charge and we explained we had been told it was not chargeable due to the faulty shower. She said there was no record of this but agreed to waive the fee. Awkward. All in all a big disappointment.(even at discounted rate). We would not stay here again.
