Just off the main street in a town rich with antebellum and cinematic history, The Beaufort Inn fills a city block with a Victorian mansion, meticulously restored century-old cottages, and heaps of lowcountry grace. Dating back to 1897, the coral-pink mansion frames a courtyard where fairylights dance between palmettos, to the hushed sound of burbling fountains. It sets a decidedly relaxed pace, perfect for sipping tea while swaying back and forth in a rocking chair on one of the breezy verandahs.

The property witnessed the bookends of the Civil War, serving as the spot where the articles of secession were drafted, and where freed slave voting rights were enacted. More recently, the town became a favorite of filmmakers, serving as the backdrop for 1980s comedy "The Big Chill" and Academy Award nominee "The Prince of Tides." The hotel is in a great location -- a five-minute walk from the waterfront and only a little further from the bobbing yachts in the picturesque marina. If you have a car, be sure to make the half-hour drive to Hunting Island State Park, where the beaches are bordered by 5,000 acres of maritime forest. Hire a kayak and paddle the lagoon or climb the cast-iron stairs at Hunting Island Lighthouse.

The mood is intimate and boutique, with fewer than 40 rooms spread over 11 buildings. Rooms are "conversation pieces," says Frommer’s, with warm pine floors and period furnishings that recall genteel southern estates. Some are more old fashioned than others, with patterned wallpaper and lacy bedspreads. Suites -- one of which is named after Julia Roberts, who stayed here while filming -- are more luxurious, with gas fireplaces and private sitting rooms. Equally impressive are the Garden Cottages, which face the pretty gardens or courtyard and have claw-foot tubs and massaging showers.

The bistro provides free afternoon snacks such as fresh-baked scones and jams, and free Wi-Fi streams over the whole property. A full-service day-spa doles out relaxing treatments in a restored historic home.

From the press:
  • "You'll probably have to be pried, kicking and screaming, out of your room at the end of your stay" -- Fodor’s
  • "Built in 1897, this is the most appealing hotel in Beaufort and the place where whatever movie star happens to be shooting a film in town is likely to stay" -- Frommer’s

Enjoyed Most: Our friendly reception and invitation to our wonderful room
Other Comments: The restaurant wasn't open on the evening we arrived. They offered to take it off the next days room charge. We really weren't planning on staying two days, but it worked out fine.

Enjoyed Most: Beautiful inn. Loved all the porches and the courtyards. The breakfasts were very good. Friendly staff, especially the chef :)
Other Comments: This was our first time to Savannah, Beaufort, and Charleston. We really enjoyed Beaufort. It was a relaxing stay, the place behind the shops on the waterfront is absolutely beautiful and we enjoyed sitting in the big swings looking out at the water. Would have enjoyed staying longer at the Inn.

Other Comments: The special menu at the restaurant was not available until just a couple hours before the meal. It would be helpful to know this earlier to help plan where you want to eat. It was surprising that they ran out of all juice for breakfast.
