Set in 26 acres of landscaped grounds, The New Hall Hotel is reputed to be the oldest inhabited moated house in the country. The 4-star property dates back to the 13th century and retains many of its medieval features, including "fine panelling and mullioned stained-glass windows", notes The AA Hotel Guide 2015.

Facilities include a 9-hole pitch-and-putt course, tennis courts, a fitness centre and a spa with an indoor pool.

The 2-AA-Rosette restaurant serves a seasonal menu with regularly changing dishes. The hotel also serves snacks and cream teas, featuring scones, preserves, clotted cream and a choice of teas or infusions.

Wi-Fi is free in all rooms. Executive Rooms have views over the gardens and those in the main house have original features, such as fireplaces.

Birmingham city centre is a 25-minute drive or a 20-minute train journey from Sutton Coldfield station. Aston Hall, a Grade I-listed Jacobean mansion, is 20 minutes away by car. Twycross Zoo, which has a large collection of primates and other animals, is half an hour's drive away; tickets are available at the hotel.

Enjoyed Most: Hotel and grounds lovely
Other Comments: Meal in evening was disappointing. Expectations were high given it's alleged 2 AA Rosette status but the food itself was only mediocre. This was one of the main reasons the break was booked. For example, one of the courses was prawn cocktail and I expected fresh peeled prawns in a tasty sauce and we were served (by very pleasant wait staff) a few defrosted frozen prawns which tasted bland, on bland chopped lettuce and very little sauce at all to speak of. Have had better down the local pub for £3.00, so was infinitely disappointed re this element of the break.
