Once a haunt for artists like Andy Warhol and Basquiat, The Paramount is now neighbors with today's stage stars, as dozens of Broadway theaters are within a five-minute walk. Times Square is half a block east, Central Park is a 15-minute walk north and Restaurant Row is a few steps to Eighth Avenue.
The façade of The Paramount, with its crown molding and French Renaissance influence, sticks out among its modernly designed neighbors. Though the intentionally dark lobby may require some adjustment for your eyes, it's the hotel's main attraction. Designed by well-regarded interior designer Meyer Davis, the lobby is classy and modern; it's less like the building's French Renaissance façade and more like a New York nightclub. In fact, a nightly DJ spins on the second floor of the lobby (excluding Sunday).
It's easy to get lost in the low lighting, so keep in mind that the check-in desk and concierge are to the right once you walk into the lobby, and the elevators are to the left. When deciding on a room, know that that rooms toward the back of the hotel will minimize street noise, and most rooms toward the front of the hotel have a view of the city. This hotel doesn’t have views of famous skyscrapers, but you can walk there or take one of eight nearby trains.
The standard rooms are a bit tight for two people and their luggage, but are ideal for single travelers. Stay in a Deluxe room or a room with two beds if you need more space. Couples might enjoy the intimacy of the cozy rooms, but families will not be a great fit (literally). Guest rooms amenities are kept to the bare essentials.
The hotel is also home to an on-site restaurant and an Italian coffee bar. Wi-Fi and use of the fitness center are included in the nightly facility fee. Be sure to connect with the concierge for tips on navigating the local area and securing difficult restaurant reservations.
