Among the vast state forests of upstate New York's Finger Lakes, a region described by Frommer's as "one of mesmerizing beauty, like a dream marriage of Scotland and Napa Valley," lies the sprawling Hope Lake Lodge and Cascades Indoor Waterpark. Directly across the road from Greek Peak Mountain Resort, this massive property was awarded top honors by TripAdvisor travelers as one of the best U.S. resorts for families. Within driving distance of the Northeast's major cities, the resort provides year-round activities to keep both adults and children entertained.
Taking a cue from the neighboring Great North Woods, Hope Lake Lodge's decor envelops visitors with the aura of a cozy ski chalet, outfitted with furnishings from locally sourced materials and vendors. In the striking "Great Room" lobby, guests are greeted with a massive stone fireplace and soaring wooden ceilings above. Upstairs, each suite comes complete with a full kitchen, gas fireplace, dining area, spa-quality mattresses and pull-out couches that create extra sleeping space for larger families.
Within the lobby, the Acorn Grill is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, featuring traditional American fare alongside specialities like local game for more adventurous palates. In the evening, the adjacent Bobcat Lounge is favored among visitors and local residents alike for their specialty cocktails, locally brewed draft beers on tap, and wines from nearby Finger Lakes wineries.
From directly inside the lodge, guests can access the Cascades Indoor Waterpark, the only indoor water park in Central New York with over 500 feet of slides, a wave pool, activity tower and heated pool -- all maintained at a pleasant 84 degrees year-round. While water park passes are available for an additional fee, the outdoor heated pool and hot tub are complimentary with any stay.
During the winter, take a free shuttle to Greek Peak Mountain Resort for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snow tubing, and an adventure center complete with zip-lining, a mountain coaster and the High Peaks Challenge Ropes Course. Those looking for more relaxed recreation can enjoy canoe, rowboat, paddleboat, and fishing pole rentals at Hope Lake Park, as well as a walking and jogging trail and 24-hour fitness center.
