Be one of the first to stay at the brand-new JW Marriott Venice Resort, on the private island of Isola delle Rose (the 'Island of Roses') in Venice. The luxurious hotel opened in March 2015 and is Marriott's first resort in Europe. The New York Post named it one of the 10 hotels opening in 2015 that are "worth the splurge".

You'll be staying a 15-minute speedboat ride away from St Mark's Square -- easily reachable by the complimentary 24-hour shuttle service offered to all guests (runs every 20 minutes). But there is little need to ever leave the island, with seven dining options, the city's largest spa, and a myriad of options to keep guests entertained. The jewel in the resort's crown is a rooftop infinity pool with 360-degree views.

For dinner, the Dopolavoro Dining Room is set on the island's private dock and serves Venetian-inspired fare, with produce from the island and the local Rialto Market. There is also a rooftop restaurant for small plates alongside cocktails, a garden grill and delicatessen, plus an on-site cooking school.

The spa offers a range of therapies in eight treatment rooms, plus there are plunge pools, steam rooms and therapy baths. There is also a family pool, kid's club and sailing and gondola lessons are available. For something more cultural, try your hand at a Murano glassmaking workshop or pop over to nearby Burano, known for its lace making.

The bedrooms are light and modern, with views over the garden or lagoon. Sixteen of the suites have their own private swimming pools. Wi-Fi is available (extra charge applies).

Enjoyed Most: Beautiful grounds, facilities, particularly the pool bar.
Other Comments: Food and beverage prices at premium level, however the only restaurant open was disorganised and the quality of the food was below acceptable standard. I would not eat there if I stayed at the hotel again.

Enjoyed Most: Everything. Truly a 5 star hotel. Nice deluxe room on third floor. Beautiful pool overlooking St Marks in skyline. Exceptional buffet and great dinner menu. Enjoyed complimentary shuttle boat ride back and forth between hotel and San Marco. All staff very professional. Often remember your name next day after just one contact. All staff spoke very good English, as well as two or three others in addition.
Other Comments: Food and beverage manager was obviously present at dinner time. He would greet very important people, eating one night with one family. In US the maitre 'd (or food and beverage manager in this case) would make an effort to greet all diners if only introduce himself and make them feel welcome. He pretty much ignored everyone else in the room. Perhaps he knew what we paid for our room.

Enjoyed Most: I liked the open space. The spacious rooms. The manager MAX was very nice to us. GianMarco the 20 year old receptionist was absolutely gracious and nice. Carlo in the 'cusina' (kitchen) was excellent and cutting our fish. We were impressed by the hospitality and the services there. It would have been nice for the spa and gym to be open so we could use it.
