It’s modern, stylish and comfortable, but the Apex City of Edinburgh Hotel’s biggest draw is its location. Once a medieval marketplace, the Grassmarket area of the Old Town is now a lively area with eclectic shops, vintage boutiques, trendy restaurants and stunning views of Edinburgh Castle (some of the hotel’s rooms overlook the castle).
Take a break from eating or shopping, though, and you’re right where you need to be for sightseeing. A 4-minute walk takes you to the National Museum of Scotland, and a 6-minute walk to both the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. Stroll over to pretty Holyrood Park (20 minutes) and you can climb to the top of Arthur’s Seat (a dormant volcano) for the best views of the city.
The hotel’s stylish Agua Bar and Restaurant has Moroccan tiles, mustard banquette seating and Emerson industrial lighting. Look for dishes such as cullen skink (smoked haddock and bacon soup -- a Scottish speciality), heather-honey glazed pork belly and a Highlands and Islands cheese platter. Indulge, then work it off in the hotel’s indoor swimming pool or gym -- or relax in the “tropicarium” -- a cross between a sauna and a steam room.
City Rooms come with free Wi-Fi and mineral water, while the new City Plus Rooms have extras such as pod coffee machines, air-conditioning and bathrobes. Family Rooms are bigger and include a sofa bed, and the Master Suite is particularly luxurious, with a separate lounge area and views of Edinburgh Castle.
