The 4-star Barberstown Castle captivates its guests with both its setting in historic County Kildare and architecture spanning the 13th to the 21st centuries.

Originally built in the 1200s to protect the village of Barberstown from attacks, the property has had 37 owners over the years. A wing was added in the Elizabethan period, plus a Georgian country house, and finally an extension in 2006, giving the hotel a unique mix of fixtures and period flourishes from its 750-year history.

Expect ornate fireplaces, heavily gilded mirrors, gold chandeliers, carved oak four poster beds in the bedrooms, original tiled floors and a stunning glass-walled tea room.

The hotel's richly decorated Barton Rooms Restaurant holds two AA Rosettes and serves French and Irish cuisine. The hotel also has the airy Tea Rooms Restuarant, with open fires and a view of the terrace, where you can enjoy light daytime meals and cream teas.

The hotel sits in 20 acres of land in Straffan, County Kildare. The River Liffey is nearby and Dublin is 30 minutes by car. Take a walk through Straffan's beautiful Lodge Park Walled Garden, visit the popular Steam Museum or take in the spectacular butterflies in the tropical greenhouse of Straffan Butterfly Farm.

From the press:
  • "Bedrooms are… elegantly appointed with relaxing seating areas" -- The AA
  • "With a 13th-century castle keep at one end, an Elizabethan section in the middle, a large Georgian country house at the other end, and a modern wing, Barberstown Castle represents 750 years of Irish history" -- Fodor's
