Macdonald Gisborough Hall is an ivy-clad country-house hotel in the North Yorkshire countryside, praised by The AA for its "richly furnished" rooms and "excellent" food. The Victorian property was a finalist in the White Rose Large Hotel of the Year Awards 2016 and holds a Gold Award from Green Tourism.

This AA 4-star property is nestled on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. It's around 30 minutes' drive from the picturesque fishing town of Whitby and the northeast coast, and is just over an hour from York.

The former home of the prestigious Chaloner family -- the manor of Gisborough was acquired in 1558 by Thomas Chaloner, an ambassador for Elizabeth I -- Gisborough Hall has 70 bedrooms, spread across the main house and the Woodlands Wing. The hotel's Revival Zone spa offers treatments (supplements apply) and deals on spa packages.

There are plenty of dining options: enjoy morning coffee in the cosy Drawing Room -- which has open fires -- take afternoon tea in the Main Hall or have a pre-dinner drink with woodland views on the Terrace. Once dinner rolls around, you can choose from the fine-dining 2-AA-Rosette Chaloner's Restaurant or the less formal G Bar and Bistro, which serves contemporary dishes made using locally sourced ingredients.

An impressive 99% of Travelzoo members who reviewed their stay at this property enjoyed their experience, praising the "excellent food", "exceptionally helpful" staff and "beautiful grounds".

Trek to rooms in the new wing was unexpected. Seperate Reception would be useful.

The room was lovely. There were just few things to tweak, mentioned below. The breakfasts was excellent really good choice of food set you up for the day. Look forward to returning in the very near future.
Other Comments
Unfortunately, there was no reference in their room visitors book regarding types of food available or prices either in their restaurant or bistro. On the second night there were no shower gels in the bathroom or milk and tea replacements on the tea tray. The staff on reception at arrival were friendly but we needed to return to our car with all the luggage as we were in the Woodland suite.

Only gripe was firmness of bed. The mattress had a thin topper but designed only to keep mattress clean, I think. Husband and I both had aching backs and didn't sleep well. Even a 1" memory foam topper would have made a difference.
