Dubbed the "gateway to the world" by its proud locals, Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city (after Berlin). The relexa Hotel Bellevue sits on Alster Lake in the St Georg quarter, and has water views from many windows. This area is known for its art and culture -- the Deutsches Schauspielhaus theatre has been here since 1901 -- and it's just a short walk from shopping streets Mönckebergstrasse and Jungfernstieg. The main train station is a 10-minute walk and the Old Town is a short bus ride away.
The hotel has an art nouveau façade and maritime detailing throughout the interior -- think model boats, lifebuoys and navigation dials. The Lower Deck restaurant serves dinner daily, including taster portions of traditional Hamburg cuisine for the more curious diner. A tasty breakfast and light lunch are served upstairs at the Alster Charme restaurant. The lake views provide a pretty backdrop to a morning buffet of pastries and bread, smoked fish specialities, salads and fresh fruit.
The bedrooms are spread across three buildings -- those in the historic main house are mostly Premium Rooms. These are newly renovated, spacious and a number have naval touches, with striped bedspreads or wallpaper. Upgrade to an Alster-view room to make the most of those watery vistas. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
