Why We Love It

  • Boutique hotel just a 15-minute drive to downtown Santa Barbara
  • Free extras include nightly happy hour, yoga classes and in-room record players
  • S'mores are offered by the fireside
  • Surfer-cool vibe with lively poolside DJ sets on Saturdays and Sundays

The Goodland, located a 15-minute drive from downtown Santa Barbara, is part of the boutique Kimpton Hotel chain. A laid-back, retro-chic surf vibe sets this hotel apart from the typical Kimpton offering, but the place still boasts the brand's signature attention to detail and quality of service. Classic surfboards pepper the hotel, which is accentuated by coastal wood and earth tones to create a warm beach feel.

Each guest room features a record player, and guests have access to a vinyl library where they can pick the perfect soundtrack for their stay. The nightly hosted happy hour -- the hotel calls it Social Hour -- gives travelers the chance to mingle while enjoying free (yes, free) wine by the glass. DJs, game night, tarot card readings and trivia night are also among the weekly offerings.

Play billiards or backgammon while sipping artisan cocktails in the Good Bar, or dine alfresco at the Outpost Restaurant, where a fresh, seasonal menu focuses on locally sourced ingredients.

Guests can find inner peace in poolside yoga classes or burn off that extra cocktail in the fitness center.

Hop on one of the hotel’s beach cruisers and pedal 10 minutes to Goleta Beach for a game of volleyball or a picnic, or make the short drive into Santa Barbara and check out the trendy Funk Zone neighborhood chock-full of wine bars and art galleries.

Did not think the resort fee was worth it, especially since anyone could access the pool, even if you weren't staying there. Our shower drain did not work, so that made me wonder how the cleaning staff cleaned the shower since it started filling up within less than a minute of the water being on. We stayed there when it wasn't too busy, but I imagine it would be very noisy for light sleepers during the busy season. Room doors slamming shut made it hard to sleep.

Love that laid back vibe mixed with great staff and many on-site conveniences at a reasonable price!

While it is many steps up from a 1950s roadside motel, the basic bones are the same and they show thru the renovations. And of course the "roadside" has become a thruway thru the town, reminding you that your surfer's paradise from the 50s long gone.

room very noisy, too many party people in adjacent rooms, a hidden charge of $25 for -"Goodland good time' "not sure of the exact wording" charge. I asked what it was and they said it was for parking, free wine, etc. we did not have a car and did not drink any wine. we arrived around 9pm and left at 9 am.

Lots of dogs. Wet dog smell around many areas. Food at restaurant was just OK. Service was poor at restaurant and bar.

Terrific front desk staff (big cheer for Ashley); charmingly beachy rooms with ample amenities; a pet policy that welcomed our dog, at no extra charge, and supplied a bed for her.

The hotel has a wonderful, playful vibe. Sangria as the welcome drink at check-in! An LP lending library, which lets you borrow records and listen to them in the old-fashioned player in your room. Super friendly staff. The hotel is easy access to Highway 101, and a quick 15 minutes from Santa Barbara.

The staff was incredible especially the bar staff. We got to know a lot of them since we were there for five days and predominately ate and drank at the hotel during our stay. The bartenders were engaging, entertaining and know their drinks. We also love that the menu, both in the bar and restaurant, is seasonal and changes periodically. The decor was fresh and awesome too to go along with those fresh and awesome cocktails. I think Goodland gets lot of brownie points by trying to cut down hotel waste by providing the larger bottle toiletry items (shampoo conditioner, shower gel) that can be used during your stay or purchased if the guest wants to take them home. the piped in scent throughout the hotel that was a nice compliment to these products was also a nice touch. We also loved the unique touch of the Vinyl room and enjoyed listening to a lot of the albums and playing the games throughout the grounds.

The Irish chef (who is the only one we met and seemed to work all the time) made some yummy dishes bonita flakes seasoned blistered shisito peppers for wine hour and his coconut braised chicken ramen for ramen night were definite! It was nice being able to grab forgotten home comforts at the front desk too...everything was super convenient. Only complaint probably would be the shower and that was minor...was difficult to control, didn't have a lot of range of temperatures and lacked a lot of pressure. It might just need some servicing. It's amazing they took an old Holiday Inn and converted it to this little gem so def. a minor critique.

Rooms are very comfortable, the pool was fun. Enjoyed the records in our room and playing backgammon in the lobby..

Had to take away one star for the staff, while the front desk service was great the female bartender at the restaurant bar Friday 6/7 was extremely rude, zero personality. Other than that really enjoyable, great vibe. Will definitely come back and recommend to friends

On July 3rd and July 4th the hotel hosted two pool parties with music from 12-5pm. The public was invited and they took over the whole area. No notice was posted on the Goodland website and I was not warned of this on Travelzoo.
