"A little bit of Africa in the middle of the Channel," the Duke of Richmond has "masses to take in," says The Times. With stylishly eccentric interiors -- think exotic leopard-print carpets and polished checkerboard floors -- you'd never guess that you’re in Guernsey, where locals still sell eggs and home-grown freesias from honesty boxes on the quiet lanes.
But it's not just the decor that turns heads. In the restaurant, guests can watch the chefs whip up homemade crab cakes and rotisserie chicken in the glass-walled kitchen and sample wine imported from the owner's South African vineyard. Squeeze in a splash in the heated outdoor pool (open during summer) and soak up the rays on the terrace.
Rooms are quiet, with modern stripes and bold colors, alongside pretty chandeliers and period features. Many have sea views, and extra beds can be accommodated in some rooms for families. Opt for a Junior Suite for more space – some also have private terraces with lounge chairs.
The hotel is set in a quiet residential area overlooking Cambridge Garden, a 10-minute walk downhill to the seafront and town center (St Peter Port is on a steep hill, so you might want to take a taxi back to the hotel). Spend the day exploring the 800-year-old Castle Cornet on the harborfront or stroll to the Victorian Candie Gardens, where manicured lawns stretch toward stunning views across the rooftops and sea beyond. Don’t miss Hauteville House, where Victor Hugo (author of Les Misérables) spent 15 years in exile.
