The Vienna House zur Bleiche Schaffhausen opened in 2014 on the edge of the city's Old Town right next to the railway station. Described as "one of Switzerland's most charming" places by the Michelin Travel Guide, Schaffhausen is known for its Renaissance style and brightly painted facades, but the arcona Living hotel is a modern addition. Expect a contemporary, bright décor, free Wi-Fi throughout and an impressive spa area.
Guests will be staying within a 10-minute walk of the Rhine and the Munot Fortress, which dates back to the 16th century and has been protected by guards since 1377. The Rhine Falls, Europe's largest, are less than two miles away and are worth a visit one afternoon. Further afield, Lake Constance, Zurich or Basel are all easily accessible by train.
The hotel's breakfast in particular wins praise for its plentiful continental buffet with eggs cooked to order. Later on, the Weinwirtschaft Lounge & Restaurant cooks up regional specialities from an open-plan show kitchen and there is a wine store where you can buy a bottle to enjoy later.
The rooms are large with good air conditioning and soundproofing, as well as seating areas and mini bars as standard. Superior Rooms are on the higher floors and have the better views.
Don't miss the impressive asia spa, which covers two floors and has a large gym, experience showers, infusion saunas and steam rooms, plus a hammam. Treatments are available (extra charge applies) and massages are something of a speciality -- try the Bamboo Massage performed with bamboo canes.
