Why We Love It

  • Two blocks from the Bloomingdale's flagship store and three blocks from Fifth Avenue's big shops
  • Guest rooms have marble bathrooms and are consistently noted for how quiet they are, though they are snug and a little dated
  • Smack between Midtown East, which caters to a business crowd with glitzy big-ticket restaurants and the Upper East Side’s cozy, local spots along Second and Third Avenues
  • Five blocks from Central Park and about 10 blocks from Rockefeller Center

Overview

The Renaissance New York Hotel 57 straddles two neighborhoods: business-oriented, bustling Midtown and the genteel, quiet and moneyed Upper East Side.

Guest rooms are on the smaller side and the furniture is stylish but slightly dated. Still, previous guests consistently praise the comfortable beds and how quiet the rooms are considering the busy street below. Many rooms feature views of the Midtown Manhattan area.

Within walking distance, guests will find many recognizable sights: the Bloomingdale's flagship department store, Central Park and Rockefeller Center are all within 10 blocks, as are several subway stations for quick whisks downtown toward more affordable and local-friendly dining options.

Should have noted on advertisement that restaurant is closed and rooftop terrace. Disappointing that we could not get breakfast.

The room was very nice (small, but it's NYC so goes without saying).

We did have one issue that was very unfortunate. The doorman told us we would have plenty of time to get to Newark airport if we gave ourselves 1.5 hrs to get there. He was really pushing we use their car service for cost purposes too, rather than a taxi. He told us we could take also take the train and when we asked what would be best he said any would be fine, no big deal. So we gave ourselves 1.5 hrs so that we would be there 2 hours before our international flight. It ended up taking 3 hours to get to the airport and we missed our flight. After talking to several friends in NY they said it's absolutely unacceptable to suggest anything other than the train to get to Newark, particularly on a Friday afternoon (with rain) as this was. They said literally any New Yorker would tell you that, so it leads me to believe he was just trying to sell their car service to charge us $100, which is frustrating because he was actually very nice.

Renovation work detracted a bit from the ambiance. Hot water from the sink took too long to get hot in the morning. A/C was too loud when it came on at night.

The hotel was in a great location with ease of access to cabs and the subway.

It would have been nice to know beforehand that the hotel was under construction. The room was also very hot, no matter how we set the thermostat.

The hotel front desk charged me much higher price and tried to deny my TravelZoo coupon, saying that the deal was between me and TravelZoo, not the hotel. After 20 min arguing, the guy finally reluctantly charged me the correct fee which is listed on the TravelZoo confirmation.
