Overview

With a family-owned history that spans across four generations and over half a century, the Handlery Hotel specializes in friendly service. A moderate price tag and an easy-to-reach locale add to the appeal.

The boutique hotel is set in the north part of town in the Mission Valley neighborhood, so guests can hop on the highway and be at most of the city’s top attractions -- SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, the Fashion Valley Mall and the Gaslamp District -- in 15 minutes flat. Parking is safe and secure and half the price of downtown hotels, plus there’s a convenient complimentary shuttle that treks to Old Town and spots within 3 miles.

Guest rooms are styled in traditional fashion and kept fresh with modern touches like free Wi-Fi and ergonomic work desks. Just beyond the sleeping quarters sits the centerpiece of the property -- a huge outdoor heated pool and hot tub with plenty of chaises for year-round lounging, and seasonal snacks and beverages from the poolside Reef Lounge. Upgraded premier rooms offer the best views and quickest access to the pool. The pool area closes at 10 p.m. but can be noisy during the day.

After a dip, head to the 950 Lounge for happy hour cocktails on Mondays-Thursdays, and jazz nights every Friday where staff menu picks like panko-crusted portebello mushroom fries are served in causal SoCal style. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at Postcards, which specializes in American bistro cuisine.

Make the most of the city with this seven-day SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo and Safari Park pass.

Close by all the attractions we wanted to go (Seaworld, San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park)

There are no elevators. So if you have a baby and a stroller, might want to request a room on the ground level.

The hotel in general! We did not stay. Hotel was old. Rooms were not very nice. No elevator to 2nd floor. Had to carry heavy suitcases.

Besides the TravelZoo deal; the location worked well for us, and the hotel was clean.

Our room was very basic but still nice with a private balcony. Recommend making a reservation for the shuttle.

I thought the pool was very nice. Also the rooms were in good shape despite being a bit dated.

Overall it was a positive experience. There are a couple of things that potential travelers should be aware of when deciding whether or not to stay here or somewhere else. First, there is no elevator, at least in the 2 story building I was in (Del Ray I believe the building was called). Second, the buildings are a bit dated, having an 80s feel. However, they have clearly done a good job maintaining the place and have upgraded key items such as the televisions in the rooms and the major common areas such as the pool and lobby. My only other critique is that the shuttle service is a little haphazard. If you stay, in say, a hilton the shuttles are very available to the guests. At the Handlery, however you need to make sure well ahead of time that you schedule your shuttle for your destination. Generally though, nice place with nice people for a decent price. Also, it's near some great major attractions (Balboa park, zoo, Sea World).

Clean, comfortable, well maintained property.

The deal included free breakfast and parking. The breakfast was delicious. Since the hotel is a bit away from everything, having the free parking was a big plus. Everyone was friendly, pool and hot tub were very clean, loved it!

The staff was always accommodating to our requests

We came with a larger group staying in three separate rooms with young kids. When we arrived, the front staff made sure that we had the rooms right next door to each other and even thought to put us on the first floor where the rooms had a shared patio space so the kids could run around outside safely.

They have a fabulous pool

I was given an upgrade to a room with a balcony but couldn't open the doors bc there were so many mosquitos. The refrigerator leaked, the toilet ran, the walls were thin so I could hear everything from the noisy family next door. This property is nothing like the lovely hotel in Union Square San Francisco I stay at often.
