The Lake Country House Hotel & Spa in Mid Wales is "the place to go for total Victorian country elegance," says Fodor's. Built in 1840 as a hunting and fishing lodge, the country-house hotel is set in 50 acres surrounded by a 3-acre lake, thick woods and beautiful rhododendron-lined pathways. The property is a haven for wildlife; herons, dippers and kingfishers can be spotted on the lake.

The property is a 30-minute drive from Brecon town center and an hour's drive from the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is a 45-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye -- a small market town referred to as the "town of books", that’s perfect for a stroll round the antique shops and a spot of afternoon tea.

The restaurant has a 300-strong wine list and favors wines of the Old World with some vintages dating back to 1959.

Bedrooms are all individually designed. Suites have a spacious lounge and bedroom area, which include a bath and separate shower. Extras include luxury bath robes, free Wi-Fi access, iPod docking stations, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and home-made biscuits. Suites are either in the main house or the lodge; suites in the lodges have double doors opening onto the grounds.

The Kingfisher Spa has an indoor pool, a sauna and an outdoor hot tub that looks out on the lake. Other facilities include a 50-foot indoor pool, a gym, a sauna and four spa treatment rooms. There's also a 9-hole par-3 golf course, a tennis court, a croquet lawn and a billiards room. Anglers can try fishing in the well-stocked trout lake, a short walk from the hotel.

The setting was lovely despite the appalling weather which didn't dampen our stay. The service was excellent attentive but unobtrusive. We didn't have time to make the most of the facilities as we were unwell for one of the days but didn't spoil our experience.
