Costa Rica is known for its eco-lodges, but few can boast green certification and a 5-star rating. The Gaia Hotel and Reserve has both of these distinctions in its favor. Described by Frommer’s as "over-the-top luxury," it was also named Mexico & Central America’s Leading Boutique Hotel at the World Travel Awards in 2015, for the sixth time.

This 20-room hilltop hotel is minutes from Manuel Antonio National Park, home to white-faced capuchin monkeys, sloths and more than 150 species of birds, and sits on a reserve that protects native flora and fauna. Catch views of the pristine habitat while taking a dip in the three-tier infinity pool that rises high above the rainforest.

Rooms and suites are spacious and modern, offering sea or jungle views. The one- and two-bedroom villas are great for small groups, and several room types have private balconies. Each room has a personalized concierge.

La Luna restaurant has an expansive terrace overlooking the coastline and serves up local cuisine such as pan-seared Costa Rican tuna crusted with ginger and panko, and a traditional breakfast of gallo pinto (rice and beans), eggs, tortillas and fried plantains. The on-site spa has a steam bath and offers Vichy shower and body treatments.

From the press:
  • "Despite the over-the-top luxury here, this hotel is dedicated to sustainable and green tourism practices" -- Frommer’s
  • "Clinging to the top of a mountain within a 13-acre private nature reserve, this contemporary playground on Costa Rica's western coast suggests a modernistic game of Chutes and Ladders" -- Condé Nast Traveler

Enjoyed Most: The beautiful grounds and friendly staff.

Enjoyed Most: It's hard to say what was best as the Gaia is a complete, wonderful experience. Beautiful design. Great grounds--on its own nature preserve--with sloths, monkeys, and incredible red macaws. And then the service was personable, polite, perfectly timed. A big shout out to Joshua for all his great drinks and attentiveness at the pool. And we can't say enough about the food, too--I'm craving those caramelized plantains that are over a delicious dome of rice and beans. Do take guided tours, as Gaia only hires the best people for that. Saul will make Manuel Antonio even a more special experience.
