Map & Directions

San Francisco International Airport is about 30 minutes south by car. A BART mass transit train runs from the airport to Powell Street downtown. From there, visitors can transfer to a cable car for the rickety climb eight blocks up to the hotel. This option may be tougher if traveling with lots of luggage.

In the 19th century, San Francisco's Nob Hill neighborhood was a choice for some of the country's wealthiest tycoons, who loaded the streets with sprawling, ornate mansions and an elegance that persists through today. On the site of industrialist Leland Stanford's former mansion, the AAA 4-Diamond rated Stanford Court hotel rises inside a handsome, cream-colored structure that went up a few years after the mansion fell apart in the 1906 earthquake.

The creams and yellows persist through the interiors, which have a clean, contemporary style. The entrance is old-world grand, with a fountain burbling away beneath an ochre stained glass dome. Beds are dressed with Frette linens, and heated towel racks in the bathrooms help stave off the city's chill.

Nob Hill is, in fact, hilly, but this hotel's perch at the intersection of California Street and Powell Street makes it a particularly good spot from which to tackle the terrain. Two of the city's iconic cable car lines run right by, one heading east-west toward the financial district, the other heading north-south toward Fisherman's Wharf and SoMa. The main thicket of Chinatown is about three blocks away, and Union Square's shopping is about five blocks away.

  • "The fairly sizeable rooms are a relative bargain for Nob Hill" -- Rough Guide
  • "'Well-maintained' digs feature 'incredibly comfortable' beds and some 'amazing' city views" -- Zagat

Enjoyed Most: Clean, comfortable room
Valencia Sep 23, 2016 SAN FRANCISCO, CA, United States
Enjoyed Most: Everyone was extremely helpful and friendly. When we checked in the person assisting us upgraded our room without charging us and said "happy new year!" The room was very large and comfortable. Would definitely stay there again.

Enjoyed Most: Free newspaper, fast elevators.
Other Comments: Every time I asked a question at the front desk the answer was prefaced with "Because you paid through a third party..." They couldn't even issue a statement at the end of the stay. Their policy of giving a single bottled water at the beginning of the stay and charging daily thereafter with 2 room occupants seems cheap. Finally, I've seen better breakfast buffets at Embassy Suites. It was unappealing and we did not partake. Walking from the entrance to the street is dangerous. Finally, why would a hotel of that size and location offer no restaurant?
