Style is paramount at the PUBLIC Chicago, where guest rooms have been decorated in soothing “no-color” palettes, accented with an eclectic mix of custom-made modern furniture, a curated collection of Mondino photographs, Thassos mosaic tile floors and Corian sinks and bathtubs.

More than a pretty face, however, guest rooms at this hotel are also equipped with thick down comforters and pillows, and complimentary Wi-Fi, which will come in handy for planning day trips or scoping out the shopping and dining options on famous Michigan Avenue, just a short stroll away.

The on-site restaurant boasts farm-to-table locally sourced, sustainable menu items created by James Beard award-winning chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and the on-site café serves a wide range of specialty coffees and French pastries.

From the press:

  • “What was once the slightly faded Ambassador East is now hip and sleek; the location's as stellar as always. And the legendary Pump Room restaurant is still there, but the design is all new” -- Fodor’s

Other Comments: Amazing night bar / lounge and coffee bar!

Enjoyed Most: The lobby was bit and pretty. And the people who worked there seemed nice enough, if not willing to compensate us for our discomfort.
Other Comments: The room, while a nice size, was not terribly clean. In specific, there was what appeared to be blood on the draperies. Also, despite being all the way at the end of the hall, it was extremely noisy. We had the misfortune to have someone staying next door who hosted what sounded like 10-12 people until the wee hours of the morning. And had a not-so-quiet conversation in the hallway for another hour after that. The continental breakfast room was small, crowded, and kind of creepy.

Enjoyed Most: I did like the staff and the room.
Other Comments: The only thing that I was disappointed with was the fact that PUBLIC Chicago charged my debit card an additional $200 when I checked in to the hotel, even though I already paid for the whole weekend in advance. Now it will take about a week for the $200 to be reimbursed back on my card. It's very inconvenient and unnecessary in my opinion.

Other Comments: my only suggestion to hotel and it is rather silly but.....for a high end hotel the quality of toilet paper is about the same as a gas station.

Enjoyed Most: Very modern look and feel in the lobby. Rooms weren't the newest -- but didn't feel old or dated. Nice design touches to make it seem modern and minimalist.
Other Comments: The Gold Coast is great if you're visiting Chicago, but know that it's a little away from downtown. In the summer, the location near the lake and walking to Mag Mile, bars, shopping, etc. is sweet. But cabs are a little scarce.
