Set in the hills of southern France, 4-star La Vague Saint Paul is 1km away from the historic hilltop town of St-Paul de Vence, which has long been a favourite of the rich and famous. Described by Marie Claire as a “picture-perfect village”, the town has been visited by Picasso, Matisse and Chagall, as well as Roger Moore, Kylie Minogue and Elton John in more recent times. The city of Nice is just 20 minutes away by car and Monaco and Cannes are also easily accessible.
The boutique hotel fits in with this pretty setting. It has been newly renovated this year and has a bright modern feel. The rooms are peaceful and comfortable, with air conditioning, iPod docking stations and balconies overlooking the hillside and landscaped gardens.
Guests have free access to the outdoor pool as well as the fitness centre, and its hammam, sauna and hot tub. There is a spa as well, with a range of treatments available, and tennis and petanque courts. In the morning, a buffet breakfast is served until 11am with a selection of hot and cold items. In the evenings, a gourmet 5-course meal is served.
La Vague Saint Paul is close to the modern art museum Fondation Maeght, “where sculptures by Giacometti, Braque and Miró lurk among the umbrella pines in the estate's peaceful Mediterranean gardens” (The Daily Telegraph). The suburb of Cagnes-sur-Mer, Renoir’s final resting place, is 8km away.
