From the moment of arrival it’s clear The Hotel Modern aims to be different. Guests are greeted with a complimentary cocktail and escorted to their rooms — no check-in and no front desk. Rooms are a mix of modern furnishings and ornate antiques, and most have an accent wall in bright fuchsia. All rooms have mini fridges, free Wi-Fi and 42-inch flat-screen TVs.

The Mercedes-Benz Superdome, home of the New Orleans Saints pro football team, is a five-minute drive from the hotel. The New Orleans Convention Center and the Arts District are both a 10-minute stroll and the National World War II Museum is a five-minute walk away. The hotel’s Tivoli & Lee restaurant serves up modern Southern fare in a lively environment. The mixologists at the lobby Bellocq lounge’s serve up their signature cobblers — fruity concoctions made with a choice of spirits.

Enjoyed Most: Nothing
Other Comments: False hope. They were nice to offer us a bigger room, but they had us wait for over an hour for the bigger room. After an hour, they gave us the room key and we were in shock that the room was so tiny. We asked about the room, thinking that it was a mistake. They gave us the smaller room without telling us that that they were unable to give us the upgrade. If they were going to give us our original room, they shouldnt have made us wait an hour.

Enjoyed Most: The location was excellent and easily accessible to public transportation. Kyle was very professional and friendly. He made us feel welcome. Samuel was also very professional. Miss Scarlett, the hotel parakeet was a nice touch.
Other Comments: The advertisement made it appear to be a hip and trendy boutique hotel. I wouldn't call it false advertisement but I expected much more. Whoever did the photography for the website, did an excellent job, because our room did not look that good in person. The degree of service by some of the staff was also lacking and many of them were not friendly or professional. One day, after a long day of sightseeing, we came back to a room that had not been cleaned. Another day, the air stopped working, my room service order was wrong and I had to wait well over an hour for my order to arrive. And, on the day of departure, I had to inquire about my bill, and discovered my Travelzoo credits were not applied. Instead of apologizing, Nicole, the hotel clerk that day, made excuses, saying her shift had just started, and she seemed to have an attitude. She did remedy the situation and the other issues were resolved quickly, but the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth.

Other Comments: I asked the person who checked me in how to redeem my food and drink credit. He said to tell the restaurant to take it off my bill. When I received my bill at the restaurant, they told me to put it to my room. Upon receiving my hotel bill, they included the restaurant charge, my credit was not applied. Upon check out, I had to inform the same front desk person who checked me in, that I had a credit included with my voucher. He asked what voucher, I presented him with the same voucher I submitted upon check in, then after a few minutes of reviewing the voucher, he took the $25 off. I read reviews on Trip Advisor and this seems to be a recurring problem. You need to tell the hotel to stop offering the food and drink credit if they don't want to honor it without hassling their patrons. It's false advertising and unethical business practice. Lastly, the front desk people are less than friendly and give the impression that having to give me any level of customer service is an inconvenience.
