Overview

Appleby Manor Country House Hotel is a family-run hotel with stunning views over Eden Valley and nearby Appleby Castle. The hotel is well placed for hiking holidays, sandwiched between the Lake District fells, the Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Its well-tended gardens are a pleasure to wander around.

It may be an hour by car from popular tourist spot Lake Windermere, but the off-the-beaten-track location and Cumbrian vistas make this a shrewd option for a serene country retreat. When the weather is less amenable, guests can take a dip in the small indoor pool or relax in the Jacuzzi, sauna or steam room. There's also a well-equipped games room for a round of pool or table tennis.

Awarded a rosette by The AA Restaurant Guide, the oak-paneled restaurant has won praise for its country-house cooking, including favorites such as roast lamb and supreme of salmon. Be sure to order a cheese course -- the cheese trolley has an exceptional selection. There’s also a conservatory with direct access to the garden patio, and the charming bar has a lengthy list of malt whiskies.

Spread between the main manor, a coach house annex and the newer garden wing, rooms are outfitted with country-style furniture and have views over the putting green, gardens or fells beyond. Rooms in the original house are the most traditional, and the upgraded categories come with Jacuzzi tubs and TVs in the bathroom mirrors. Family rooms, complete with pull-out beds and extra space, are also available.

The only downside is that the external Hot Tubs are not 'hot'. The weather was 2 degrees but the water in the hot tubs was only luke warm and you couldn't sit for very long. Both hot tubs were the same. There were also NO loungers to relax on which I would expect in a spa area as you don't really want to spend 3 hours in water. The food was excellent though.
