Owning the distinction of being named the 2014 Best Hotel, General Excellence by Boston Magazine, the Ames Hotel is chic without being pretentious. The historic building -- considered Boston’s first skyscraper when constructed in 1893 -- takes shape around the hotel’s sleek interior. Sparkly, modern chandeliers and leather furnishings adorn the lobby, where large glass doors invite the outside in.

Foodies will rejoice at the dining options, including the on-site King St. Tavern. Partake in King’s Court, which happens daily from 4-6pm. Order cocktails and pass around complimentary appetizers or come to the "after party"; there's live music or a DJ from 10pm-2am, every night of the week. The grill provides a four-course prix fixe menu with succulent entrees like filet and salmon. Ordering a la carte is also an option.

With a full stomach, stroll 10 minutes to nearby attractions like Christopher Columbus Waterfont Park near Boston’s North End or head the opposite direction to the Frog Pond (where ice skating is popular during winter months).

As the day concludes, seek refuge in a minimalistic, yet fulfilling guest room that showcases arched windows, and a marble bathroom with a walk-in shower. Even the smallest rooms are 400 square feet, which is large by big city standards.

Enjoyed Most: Nice decor.
Other Comments: Hot water was a problem every morning. It was either only hot for a few minutes or barely warm. A fairly unpleasant experience, especially when it's 15 degrees outside.

Enjoyed Most: The location was perfect, convenient to all attractions and restaurants. The concierge was a great guy and very accommodating.
Other Comments: Although the buffet breakfast was only $9.95, the food choices were very disappointing. It would have been a huge benefit to have some healthy items of hot oatmeal and fresh fruit presented. My husband and I had to go out each morning to find a restaurant serving breakfast.

Enjoyed Most: Juxtoposition of old and new- modern room but classical carved column outside the window bringing the old "Ames" building into the new Ames Hotel.
Other Comments: Could upgrade paper products- tissue and bathroom paper are rough, not very nice compared to the attention to soft sheets and towels. We got a coffee maker sent to the room, not a service advertised but made the morning very relaxing to have coffee in the room. Also, bring your ipod if you want music. Only a dock in the room. I did not ask if the front desk had loaners, but we had to pay for music through the TV - a petty annoyance.
