Midtown Manhattan is bustling with business folks, tourists, delivery boys and shoppers. The Shoreham aims to leave that hubbub behind with a muted, minimal ambiance to decompress after sightseeing. The lobby is retro-futuristic with marble tiled floors, translucent glass walls, white leather seating and shag carpeting. Bits of lime green appear in the leather chairs, potted orchids and snake plants that dot the halls.
Rooms are spare and clean, illuminated by soft recessed lighting and equipped with Bose radios and pillow-top mattresses. Select rooms and suites have big, huggy leather "iJoy" massage chairs.
The two blocks around the hotel are particularly well fed, with French, Italian, Greek, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Indian and organic cuisines all represented in cozy restaurants that sit side-by-side. The Museum of Modern Art is right around the corner, and Fifth Avenue shopping is at the end of the street. All these businesses mean there can be a lot of traffic outside the hotel. Light sleepers should request rooms on a higher floor, but for the "real" New York experience, ask for a room facing the street.
