"A spectacular location" -- Condé Nast Traveller

Why We Love It

  • This deluxe family-friendly hotel has a 12-metre indoor pool, a spa & a hot tub with uninterrupted sea views
  • It is said to have been the inspiration for Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows

Overview

Commanding sweeping views of Fowey's river estuary and harbour, this deluxe family-friendly hotel on the Cornish coast was reputedly the inspiration for Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows.

Facilities at Fowey Hall include a 12-metre indoor heated swimming pool, an outdoor hot tub and a spa offering a range of pampering treatments. If the weather is fine, wander through the gardens and take in the sea views, or head to one of the nearby beaches for a stroll. There are excellent services for families at this hotel, including a crèche (£13 for two hours), a games room and a DVD library.

The restaurant serves hearty Cornish fare made using seasonal, local ingredients, so expect a menu filled with fresh seafood. While there is no bar, the Snug makes the perfect cosy spot for an aperitif.

In the main house, the rooms on the first floor are the largest, with high ceilings, while the 2nd-floor turret rooms have impressive views. The 12 rooms in the Garden Wing are connected to the main house and all have garden and estuary views. Rooms in the courtyard are a minute's walk from the main house. There is free Wi-Fi throughout.

Dogs are allowed in some rooms for £15 a night -- let the hotel know in advance if you plan on bringing your pet.

We've also negotiated a spa day and cream tea deal from £45.

I wasn’t told we were in an the annex until we arrived and I think this should have been explained when we booked. The lighting in our room was poor. Reading in bed impossible.

We had a small problem with our booking, but it was dealt with in a professional way, swiftly and with no fuss, so that was highly satisfactory. We liked the informal and accessible style of the staff, while remaining professional. The rooms were lovely, the beds comfortable, ensuring a superb night's sleep, and the big comfy sofas in front of the fires were a delight.

My daughter and I enjoyed our stay at Fowey Hall , our room was lovely, the staff were friendly and the food delicious. However we do think the wine list was very expensive.

The lovely room and bathroom

The buffet style hot breakfast meant that the food was not really as good as t could have been. Plates not warm enough, some things were running out towards the end of the serving time, not enough staff on hand to deal with personal requests and replenishing the buffet.

Enjoyed Most
Ambiance and the views over Fowey
Other Comments
Dinner was good but mains portions were a little undersized. We had the fresh plaice. Breakfast was a bit of a bun fight but it was half term. The buffet breakfast was boring and there were too many little fingers touching the food.
