"Gorgeous inside and out" -- BlackBook

Why We Love It

  • A regal 1903 beaux-arts building with bay windows
  • Refurbished, clubby library with marble fireplace and wood paneling
  • On a quiet side street less than two blocks from Times Square, between Fifth and Sixth avenues
  • In a neighborhood full of similarly handsome landmarks, like Grand Central Terminal and New York Public Library

Overview

Within four blocks of the New York Public Library, Bryant Park and the Chrysler Building is the quiet, cozy Mansfield Hotel, a handsome building from 1903 that steeps history through its hallways and lobby.

The lobby features a clubby parlor covered in honey-colored wood, with stocked bookshelves, leather armchairs pulled around classic table games and a marble fireplace.

Staying in a historic building means hallways are on the narrow side and rooms are compact -- the petite room lives up to its name -- but they are clean and comfortable. Wi-Fi is complimentary in the lobby, club room and M Bar.

Times Square and Broadway theaters are less than two blocks west. Just around the corner to the east starts the most popular stretch of Fifth Avenue shopping.

From the press:
  • "Small, exquisitely appointed, copper façade, meticulous old-time craftsmanship. Gorgeous inside and out" -- BlackBook
  • "One of the nicest little hotels in the city, the Mansfield manages to be both grand and intimate" -- Rough Guide

Beautiful hotel with vintage bar and library. Concierge was great and bar manager offered to set us up with beers, ice bucket and free bottle opener when bar had closed when we got back to hotel. Easy walking distance to Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center, as well as Penn Station. Would definitely stay there again

Bar was great - plus liked the history of the building. I was just in a dumpy room.

Bathroom was nicely renovated, but smelled like urine. Needed a good scrubbing and I told the front desk upon leaving. Blinds wouldn't open with a twist, so I had to raise them up to get sunlight into room. Room very dark in day -- but bright from street at night (with blinds back down as couldn't close slits tightly. Didn't have time to deal with issues.

The room was ready when we arrived early. Being able to get settled before hitting the town was wonderful. Also, they did give us a quiet room as we asked for so we had a great night's sleep WITH the window open.

Initial booking page said there was free breakfast. When i asked about this upon arrival they said that was not included. When I looked at my Travelzoo confirmation, I did not see anything about the free breakfast.

Being in the room next to "The Fitzgerald Apartment," where F. Scott Fitzgerald's real-life inspiration for Jay Gatsby lived out his final days. Also, the charming bar/breakfast room and library/parlor are decorated with real books!
Other Comments
Two problems: First, the rooms at the rear of the building, which we thought would be quieter than those facing the street, are plagued with a loud and constant generator-type hum. We were very pleasantly shown three rooms in all and chose one on the street side because the occasionally garbage truck is preferable to that constant hum. Second: the hallways and rooms, at least on the upper floors, are grossly overheated, even with the room heat turned off. The windows open flat into the room for cleaning, not for ventilation, but I finally found a way to lean the window against the blinds to make the night temperature bearable.

The location, the room and the bed. The only problem was the heat.
Other Comments
The problem was the heat, which was blasting, although I asked twice for it to be turned off. It was unbearable. The last night they put in an air conditioner and we could finally sleep.

Very friendly staff members, all of the ones I encountered. the fire going in the library especially during our 4th snowstorm.
Other Comments
Old school charm, enjoyed the fireplace in the library. It does have minor wear on the carpet but who cares my room was delightful and in great shape. I could use more drawers for my clothing though.
