Overview

Towering over the Magnificent Mile in the Near North neighborhood, the Allerton is a well-priced, central option for an urban getaway. Its location on Chicago’s main shopping avenue puts it within a five-minute walk of top attractions, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art and the John Hancock Observatory. A 15-minute stroll will bring you across the Chicago River to Millennium Park and Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate sculpture (aka "The Bean").

Built in the 1920s, the hotel’s traditional interiors have recently been given a boutique makeover. Art deco influences are still apparent in the velvet armchairs and shiny side tables, and the color scheme is bright. Hang out in the cozy lobby and check your emails over a free coffee, which is available 7-11 a.m.

The restaurant serves breakfast until 11 a.m., followed by a lunch of classic food, such as Cobb salads and Reuben sandwiches. Drop by the lounge in the evening for signature martinis and small bites before hitting the restaurants in neighboring Streeterville. Although there’s no pool, the hotel does have a small 24-hour gym on site, and it’s four blocks to the river or lake for waterfront runs.

Chic and contemporary, the Standard rooms come with queen beds and can be a little tight on space. Upgrade to a king bed or opt for an executive room -- they have separate living areas and some have views of the Magnificent Mile. The area can occasionally be noisy, so if possible, we'd recommend requesting a higher room to avoid being disturbed by street noise.

From the press:
  • "Standard rooms are by no means large (and the 'classic' rooms are downright tiny), but they can be a bargain off-peak" -- Lonely Planet
  • "If you want to stay in a place in the middle of it all, this is a very good choice" -- Fodor’s
  • "A historic hotel that's gotten a stylish modern makeover, the Allerton's charm lifts it a notch above the standard business-traveler hangout" -- Frommer’s

The hotel was great, especially considering they had NO reservation confirmed from you when we got there, even after we showed them our paperwork confirmation from you to us! They did, however, get us a room. We will NEVER book with you again.

The room was clean and nice. The view is nicer at night than during the day.
Other Comments
The room was very worn down. Headboard of the bed had damage. Ceiling had a crack in it and the hallway had wall paper peeling off from the bottom. Elevators were very small and 2 stopped working which meant waiting longer to get up and down. Then we getvto charges. One person tells you they are charging your card for a security deposit but does not tell you it is per night and when you ask someone about it their response is "we do not have to tell you as it is on our website". On a good note the hotel is centrally located and the parking guys are great. They seemed to be the best employess by far!!

Tiny bathroom in the standard King room, but we only stayed one night. Nice staff, clean and everything functioning with loads of toiletries. Complimentary coffee/tea in lounge.

The staff were all so friendly and nice! The front desk woman named Rio upgraded us to a king room for no extra charge. She was super nice and very helpful with all of our questions. They allowed us to do early check in and late checkout for no extra fee. The rooms were very clean and a decent size. Comfy beds too!! We were on the 16th floor looking over Michigan Ave. and we never had a problem with slow elevators or loud road noise. It was a great experience and we will definitely go back there!! No complaints from us!!

With the small rooms the rooms were clean and not a problem with the heat. We all slept very well with the comfortable bedding. The car parking valet service was a little high, but the price was great for the room and we were close to everything great location.
