Towering over the Magnificent Mile in the Near North neighborhood, the Allerton is a well-priced, central option for an urban getaway. Its location on Chicago’s main shopping avenue puts it within a five-minute walk of top attractions, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art and the John Hancock Observatory. A 15-minute stroll will bring you across the Chicago River to Millennium Park and Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate sculpture (aka "The Bean").

Built in the 1920s, the hotel’s traditional interiors have recently been given a boutique makeover. Art deco influences are still apparent in the velvet armchairs and shiny side tables, and the color scheme is bright. Hang out in the cozy lobby and check your emails over a free coffee, which is available 7-11 a.m.

The restaurant serves breakfast until 11 a.m., followed by a lunch of classic food, such as Cobb salads and Reuben sandwiches. Drop by the lounge in the evening for signature martinis and small bites before hitting the restaurants in neighboring Streeterville. Although there’s no pool, the hotel does have a small 24-hour gym on site, and it’s four blocks to the river or lake for waterfront runs.

Chic and contemporary, the Standard rooms come with queen beds and can be a little tight on space. Upgrade to a king bed or opt for an executive room -- they have separate living areas and some have views of the Magnificent Mile. The area can occasionally be noisy, so if possible, we'd recommend requesting a higher room to avoid being disturbed by street noise.

From the press:
  • "Standard rooms are by no means large (and the 'classic' rooms are downright tiny), but they can be a bargain off-peak" -- Lonely Planet
  • "If you want to stay in a place in the middle of it all, this is a very good choice" -- Fodor’s
  • "A historic hotel that's gotten a stylish modern makeover, the Allerton's charm lifts it a notch above the standard business-traveler hangout" -- Frommer’s

Location and beautiful hotel.

The only thing we didn't like was having to pay $60 to park overnight. But, the parking rates are very high on The Magnificent Mile, in line with other hotels in the area, I guess.

The parking price was a bit high and wasn't mentioned anywhere on the website until we looked at the receipt

We booked this hotel because of its location. It is close to so many restaurants and shops that we were able to pretty much walk to many of the places we wanted to go to. There is a plethora of cabs that pass by that we never had a problem getting one whenever we needed it; which we only did a couple of times. Unfortunately, during our check-in, the person doing the check-in. although friendly, forgot to write down our room number with our room keys and we had to just keep trying the keys until we found our rooms. The rooms are clean but super small. The fridge available cannot store any personal items It has drinks which you will be charged for. If any of the items are moved in order to store your personal items, the hotel will charge $25 restocking fee. The carpet in the hallways are really dingy but the reception area and concierge really looks like. The elevators are hard to come by and there is a long wait to get an elevator to go down.
