In lower west Midtown, a neighborhood popular with tourists merges with a neighborhood popular with locals, and right where they meet is this hotel. If you’re in town to see the major sights, you’ll find them along the streets just north of you: the flagship Macy’s store, Madison Square Garden, Penn Station and the Empire State Building are all within five blocks. Times Square is about 10 blocks north – you can see it glowing straight up Seventh Avenue. In the Herald Square area, many fast-fashion and affordable clothing companies have opened some of their largest stores.

If you’re seeking a quieter pace along the lines of how locals live, head south of the hotel to the Chelsea neighborhood. A district that was home to artistic fringe decades ago is now affluent with families and professionals. There are stylish restaurants and cozy home shops, as well as the Fashion Institute of Technology and Upright Citizens Brigade improv comedy theater.

The hotel dates from 1929, with a grand brick and stone façade of arched windows and deco setbacks. The double-height grand lobby is framed by paneled mirrors. A custom-made chandelier is designed to replicate the topography of New York City with a white, modernly designed seating area in the middle arranged in the shape of Manhattan. Rooms have beamed ceilings and oversize monochromatic floral murals. Some have sofas and work areas, and studios and suites have sleek urban kitchens.

Enjoyed Most: The best thing about this hotel is location.
Other Comments: The hotel was cheaply renovated in 2013. You can hear other guest in your room. The bathrooms are very small and you have to pay for Wi-Fi.

Enjoyed Most: Everything was fabulous! The hotel itself was modern and beautiful and the staff were friendly and accommodating. We even got a complimentary upgrade upon checking in. The size of the room was great for NYC, and we were thrilled to have a kitchenette! The room was rather hot, so we ran the air conditioner continuously, but that also drowned out some of the street noise so it wasn't an issue. The staff also took note of my comments when booking, as all of my requests were met perfectly. My ONLY issue (and it really isn't a big one) was that our tub had about 15-20 fruit flies when I went to shower in the morning. I was able to wash most of them down the drain and really didn't mind as other bugs would have been much worse! Great hotel! We'd definitely come back again!

Enjoyed Most: We loved the hotel. The only thing that I would sayis that, I did not like that I had to enter thru 31st St because I had a wheelchair. If I wanted to go to the restaurant I had to leave the hotel via 31st St then enter the restaurant on 7th Ave. Other than that it was fine.

Enjoyed Most: The location of the hotel and the value of the TZ deal.
Other Comments: We really did enjoy our stay, and even though check-in was a little bumpy, I appreciate the efforts to make amends for the room not being ready when we arrived.

Enjoyed Most: Size of our room was great!
Other Comments: Length of the wait to get my car from valet...about an hour. And the cost!! It made the deal from Travelzoo pointless.
