A neighborhood of old-money royalty, wealthy industrialists and family dynasties, the Upper East Side is certainly a swanky spot to lay your head. The Franklin hotel lets visitors inject themselves into this posh neighborhood, to enjoy the museums, shops and restaurants of the moneyed, even if only for a night.

Tucked on a quiet side street, the intimate hotel has fewer than 50 rooms. Each one has a pillow-top mattress, Egyptian cotton linens and bath products from upscale beauty companies. All guests wake to a daily breakfast buffet of fresh pastries and juices. Each evening, the hotel pours complimentary glasses of wine alongside gourmet wedges of cheese from the fancy Artisanal Cheese company.

About one block west is Park Avenue, a historic thoroughfare lined with gorgeous, expensive apartment buildings -- Jacqueline Kennedy grew up here and Brooke Astor lived nearby. About two blocks west is Madison Avenue, where the world’s most upscale fashion companies set up a shop. About three blocks west is Fifth Avenue, home to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guggenheim Museum and seven other significant cultural institutions. Central Park is just across Fifth Avenue.

Enjoyed Most: Rooms were very small as was bathroom, but it was just about the cleanest hotel room I've seen in awhile. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Room too warm and only able to control heat by opening windows. Beds great with excellent linens. Would definitely stay there again if I had business in the upper 80s. It is near the museum mile, but quite distant from the theater district which is why we went to NYC. Our mistake! But, overall a pleasant experience.

Enjoyed Most: Great location, close to the Metro station @ 86th and Lexington
Other Comments: There was no central air/heat and the temperature in the room was very difficult to control with the antiquated heating coils in the wall. We were too warm at night and the staff was not particularly helpful. The wi-fi was very spotty and we got bumped off continuously whenever we were in the room--my daughter went over the monthly data limit on her phone the first night we were there. The hotel should not even claim that it offers wi-fi for the $12 per night fee they charged. The continental breakfast was barely edible and the espresso machine was broken the whole time we were there. Only 2 of the wall outlets in the room worked, making it difficult to charge phones, keep the desk lamp plugged in, and use the blow dryer. Plus we had to crawl under a desk to reach the 2 that worked. Finally, there were no robes in the room as specifically listed in the TravelZoo deal. The nightly rate $129 was a good deal in theory, but not so inexpensive that I would put up with any of the above again

Enjoyed Most: Location right near 86th St. train station. Perfect for my late night end time for BAM play. Also elegant, European style breakfast buffet with quality items. Also really gracious service. And the lovely 5-6:30 pm wine and cheese buffet. Wonderful bed.
Other Comments: Tiny room, view of a wall, didn't matter. Wi-fi worked fine. Charming from start to finish.

Enjoyed Most: The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms are very small but decorated beautifully.
Other Comments: Rooms are very tiny but are sufficient for a couple. The location is close to Central Park and the Met and there are plenty of shops and restaurants in the neighborhood but it is not a tourist area. Really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely stay again.
