Hidden in a quiet side street 10 minutes' walk from the Tower of London, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel London - Tower of London puts guests right in the heart of The City. It's a modern property set among century-old buildings on Pepys Street, named after the famous diarist Samuel Pepys. Inside is just as modern -- light pours into the lobby through a striking curved glass ceiling and (fittingly) there's a library of books for guests to peruse while they tuck into their signature DoubleTree cookie or grab a drink at the lobby bar.
Set in The City, it's an obvious choice for business travellers, but the position is also great for sightseeing. It's within a 20-minute walk from some of London's biggest attractions, including St Paul's Cathedral, Borough Market and the Tower of London, and the West End is 30 minutes away by tube. The hotel is a couple of blocks from Tower Hill underground station, providing city-wide access via the District and Circle lines, and just a little further from Tower Gateway DLR station, with easy connections to Canary Wharf.
The Sky Lounge on the 12th floor gets "top marks" from The Daily Telegraph for 360-degree views "to make you weep", which take in the cityscape and nearby Tower Bridge. The open-air terrace is over-18s only from 6pm and closes at midnight, but the glass-walled bar area stays open until 2am (Monday-Saturday). A lunch menu is served until 5pm, and there are flatbreads, sweet potato fries and charcuterie platters to keep hunger at bay while you sample the martini menu. Take note: queues can be lengthy in good weather and there is no preferential access for hotel guests. There's also The City Café by the lobby, which opens for breakfast and international brasserie-style dishes at dinner, and a 24-hour fitness centre.
Guest rooms are comfortable, with contemporary furniture and a slightly corporate feel. All are equipped with free Wi-Fi and iMacs, which work as TVs or for surfing the internet (guests get the first 10 pages of printing for free). Opt for an Executive room on the ninth and tenth floors for free breakfast, late checkout and access to the executive lounge where there are afternoon drinks and nibbles. Suites are even more generous, offering all this plus a complimentary mini bar (restocked daily). Some rooms overlook the inner courtyard, so do consider an upgrade if you'd like a view.
