Moor Hall Hotel & Spa is a family-run hotel that's less than 30 minutes' drive from the centre of Birmingham, yet in a "peaceful setting, overlooking extensive grounds and an adjacent golf course" (The AA).
The building itself dates back to the 15th century and the hotel's AA-Rosette-Awarded Oak Room Restaurant, which specialises in contemporary British food, has "a real sense of grandeur and lovely views over the grounds", according to The AA. There's also a less formal restaurant, Country Kitchen, which serves up carvery dinners and daily specials.
The hotel has a swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room and a Jacuzzi, and spa treatments can be booked for an additional cost. Guests can pick up walking guides from the leisure club reception, with routes ranging between three and 6.5 miles in length.
New Hall Valley Country Park, which is a nature conservation site, and Sutton Park, which has 2400 acres of woodland, heathland and wetland, are both within a 15-minute drive of the hotel. At Sutton Park you'll find a range of activities on offer, including horse riding, fishing, canoeing and sailing.
The hotel is within 30 minutes' drive of central Birmingham, home to The Mailbox shopping complex, Arena Birmingham and a plethora of restaurants. The Library of Birmingham is also worth a look; it's described as "an architectural triumph" by Lonely Planet and there's a 7th-floor secret garden with impressive city views.
