"We travelled to the New Hobbit on the Friday afternoon and on reception the news was that due to the coronavirus the Prime Minister had forced them to close. After the initial shock they said that we could stay that night as we'd traveled so far. We had a meal that night with drinks and had breakfast next day and returned home. I must say that it is a beautiful place and they were so accommodating, we will certainly go back when the virus has all gone. Regards Michael and Claire Caine"

Overview

The New Hobbit is a traditional country inn with views across the Calder Valley. Built in the early 1900s as a pub, it's now a restaurant and inn with contemporary and vintage-styled rooms. The cosy, family-friendly restaurant is an ideal spot to take in the views while staying warm by the log fire.

The West Yorkshire mill town of Sowerby Bridge, known for its picturesque waterways (the River Calder, River Ryburn and Rochdale Canal all run through the town) lined with trendy pubs and cafés, is 20 minutes' walk from the hotel, or less than five minutes' drive. Just outside Sowerby Bridge is Mill Bank Village, which has a gold award from Yorkshire in Bloom. Once home to seven cotton, silk and wool mills, Mill Bank is now a conservation area popular with ramblers.

Halifax is arond 15 minutes' drive away -- feast your way round the Grade II-listed Victorian food market or visit 15th-century Halifax Minster and admire the remaining medieval stained-glass windows. Shibden Hall, a Grade II-listed historic house set in 32 hectares of gardens and woodlands, is just ouside Halifax. The former home of landowner and diarist Anne Lister, it recently featured in "Gentleman Jack", the BBC drama series about her life.

Unfortunately due to the current situation we had to cancel the booking on Thursday 19th as we are both in our 70s and I have Heart disease and Diabetes and did not feel that it would be advisable on government advice to travel and put ourselves or other people at risk. whilst appreciating that they have a no cancellation policy and they would have had to close anyway would it not be possible to transfer the money paid until this is over and we can rebook with them.Thank you.

Having read some of the negative reviews prior to arriving, were not sure what to expect but we were not dissapointed in our stay at the New Hobbit. The room was clean and modern, the bed very comfy, lovely new shower and toilet (broken extractor fan though). Very good night's sleep, with little noise from neighbours. The staff were excellent, and breakfast and evening meals were very good, all in all superb value for money. Thanks to everyone at The New Hobbit for looking after us and may I wish all the staff well and hope to visit again when Covid-19 has run it's course. Stay safe.

Had a bad start as we were shown to a standard room when your deal was for a superior room I was very annoyed as this treat was my husband's birthday present from me!! We managed to move to a superior room for our second night Kevin the manager explained he has had similar issues with Travelzoo bookings in the past The situation clearly needs to be sorted
