Overview

Surrounded by 2,600 acres of nature in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains and close to the Appalachian Trail, the Mountain Lake Lodge has been in business since before the Civil War and has welcomed guests since the 1930s. A wide-ranging renovation completed in 2013 revamped much of the property and added a number of outdoor recreational offerings.

Movie buffs will recognize the sandstone face of the Mountain Lake Lodge as the resort featured in the film "Dirty Dancing," but in recent years, the Lodge has reinvented itself as an outdoor adventure destination. With 22 miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing, rafting and kayaking on the New River or exploring the treetops in a zip-line aerial adventure, there's lots for guests to explore. The property recently introduced the sky slide, a five-story inflatable water slide. Note that a number of activities require additional fees, but complimentary activities include disc golf, lawn chess, tennis, shuffleboard, bocce and use of the outdoor pool and hot tub.

Rooms offer king, queen or twin beds. North Side rooms feature views of the property's expansive front lawn, and Suites add a sitting area and jetted bathtub. It's worth mentioning that because the lodge is meant to be a true getaway and an older property, rooms do not include televisions or air conditioners (fans are included in all rooms). However, between exploring the outdoors, dining at Harvest, the farm-to-table restaurant, and chatting around the fireplace in the lobby or over drinks at the Stony Creek Tavern, you should be able to get along without it.

Breakfast was overpriced for what you got and ended too early got there at 9:30 and they shut it down at 10 and it was a buffet $15 apiece 250 apiece for coffee and three dollars for orange juice word of advice if you're going to charge that much for a coffee it should be something superior to maxwell house

Walking the grounds of Mountain Lake Lodge was beautiful.

My favorite move "Dirty Dancing" inspired us to travel to Mountain Lake Lodge. Getting there was like stepping back in time when families truly visited with each other. The Lodge we stayed in was wonderful and I would definitely go back, maybe rent a cabin next time.

I appreciate the historic nature of the property, but it could be altered to make it a bit more elegant. Some aspects of the facilities seem dated (not in a historic or good way) and tired. Staff was largely pleasant but at times a bit parental. The restaurant food was, at best, just good -- the Virginia steak cut of the day was a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 for quality but a 6 on price -- and the bar area should have a bit of a "classic" feel to it. Perhaps they feel because you are somewhat of a "captive audience" they can relax on important details and quality of some food items. This place holds a ton of potential, they just need the right management to make it happen.

The morning coffee in the lobby was getting cold. I had to ask someone to heat it up in the microwave.

I loved our room. I loved sleeping with the windows open and the shutters that open wide. I liked the grounds and the grand entrance staircase and the old stone building in itself. It reminded me of our travels overseas and the old grand hotels over there. All of the staff was very very friendly and helpful to us.

There seemed to be a little confusion amongst the staff about how to apply or use our vouchers. In the end it worked out. It's just we were given two meal vouchers so we weren't sure if it was $25 a day or what. They worked hard to figure it out though.

The lodging was fine but the food as usual was sub par

The setting in the mountains was the best quality of the lodge.
Other Comments
All of the games and activities around the lodge were in poor condition, broken, missing pieces, etc. The staff was not nearly as personable as they should be for a customer service business.
