“Whitehall adds a dose of modernity to Camden, Maine” – Conde Nast Traveler

Why We Love It

  • On-site Pig + Poet restaurant embraces New England cuisine with sustainable ingredients
  • Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Edna St. Vincent Millay was discovered at a reading at the hotel in 1912

The grounds of the historic Whitehall overlook one of Maine’s most picturesque bays from the base of Mount Battie. After more than a century welcoming guests to Camden’s coastline, the iconic inn joined Lark Hotels and recently underwent extensive renovations in early 2016.

Maintaining the white clapboard siding and wraparound porch of the original sea captain’s home, the property was redesigned with eye-popping fabrics, bold hues and modern amenities such as iPads and Apple TVs in guest rooms.

Every morning, guests are treated to a breakfast of Maine-inspired small plates. Outside, old-school entertainment awaits, including shuffleboard, cornhole and a backyard fire pit idyllic for summer nights.

Pig + Poet, the on-site restaurant, features Justin Perdue, who has gained his skill set from famed chef Rick Bayless working at Topolobampo. “Poet” is a nod to Edna St. Vincent Millay, the Pulitzer Prize winner discovered at a Whitehall reading in 1912.

During the hotel’s six-month season, visitors can explore Camden’s parks and wineries, hike Mount Battie, sail Penobscot Bay or tour the six lighthouses within an hour’s drive of the property.

From the press:

  • “Along one of the prettiest bays of the state, with mountains in its backyard, the historic Whitehall hotel got Lark-ified with an eye-popping redesign” -- Forbes
  • "Cool, midcentury-modern homage to cozy New England rusticiy" -- New York Times

The ambiance of a turn-of-the-century inn. The furnishings and fixtures were fitting for the period of the early 1900's and the location was great...a short walk from the center of Camden with none of the noise or congestion.

Where to begin....Our entire experience at Whitehall was amazing. It is conveniently located about half a mile north of downtown Camden, which was a perfect distance for walking to and from town. They also have a private parking lot on site. Whitehall is 19th century inn/home that was recently renovated with more modern tastes, which made for a bit of a unique combination. I wasn't a fan of all of the décor choices, but there was nothing that would have kept me from enjoying my time there. Carrie, the concierge/manager, as well as the other members of the staff were all very friendly and was a huge help in figuring out restaurants and things to do in the area. We had booked a queen room and were unexpectedly given a King which was very nice. The rooms were relatively well insulated from noise, and featured apple TV, which was a nice touch (bring your Netflix/HBO/Showtime/hulu logins). They also provided a loaner Ipad for all rooms to use while there, which was a nice touch.
Other Comments
For the weekend that we were there the rooms were priced between 400-500+/night. If we had paid that rate I would not have been as blown away with my experience, however, for the $150/night that we paid we could not have asked for anything more.
