"Great views of busy King Street" -- Fodor's

Why We Love It

  • This intimate, family-owned property is one of the oldest buildings on King Street
  • The location is great for sightseeing -- a block from the City Market and Gibbes Museum of Art
  • Rooms are cozy and quaint, with period-style furnishings
  • The hotel offers a complimentary cheese and wine reception daily

Overview

The family-owned Kings Courtyard Inn is an intimate Greek Revival-style property with a pretty façade and a warm, romantic atmosphere. The inn dates back to the 19th century and retains a historic elegance with high ceilings, hardwood flooring and painted columns. Three courtyards make for a pleasant summertime retreat, and Waterfront Park -- great for sunset views -- is only four blocks to the east.

Charleston was voted the top city in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure readers for the third year in a row in 2015, and if you’re planning to explore, the downtown district (where the hotel is located) is the best place to start. The restored Charleston City Market and the Gibbes Museum of Art are a block away, and the ferry terminal for boat trips to Fort Sumter is within walking distance (25 minutes). Don’t miss a ride on the free CARTA trolleys -- the three loops cover most of the town, and there’s a stop near the hotel.

This historic inn is strictly a bed-and-breakfast, so facilities are limited. The hotel does, however, provide free extras, including morning coffee, a daily cheese and wine reception (5-6 p.m.), and a sherry tasting in the lobby. A continental breakfast can be delivered to your room (on request) or taken in the breakfast room or in one of the courtyards.

Rooms are quaint, with authentic wooden floors, period-style furniture, patterned curtains and oriental rugs. Pricier rooms and suites have canopy beds and fireplaces for added romance.

From the press:
  • "Ideal location for walking to shops and restaurants" -- Fodor's
  • "The rooms remain charmingly old-fashioned, most with four-posters or canopied beds, fireplaces, and fine views of the two inner courtyards" -- Frommer's

My one complaint is a big one. Scrub the mildew off the grout and the shower door track in the bathroom. That much mildew left me feeling the bathroom wasn't clean.

I liked the unusual design of the building with the open balcony overlooking the interior courtyard. The staff, overall, was pleasant. The location was very convenient to the historic district and the DASH trolley/bus system.
Other Comments
My only problem was that the bed was hard as a rock. I understand that many people like extra firm mattresses, but I really wish that in a somewhat upscale hotel they would at least keep some real rubber-tree foam mattress toppers of at least 4 inch thickness for those of us for whom a hard mattress is downright painful. I didn't sleep much because I kept waking up with my hips, shoulders and ribs hurting from the excessive firmness and lack of adequate comfort padding on the mattress. It's a shame really, i really liked the room with the high ceilings and lovely window cornices and draperies and the traditional furniture, hardwood floors with a lovely large area rug. Please call a mattress company and order a few 4 inch thick soft mattress toppers that could be used on top of your hard mattresses.
