Described by National Geographic as a "storybook realm of hills, stonewalled fields, forests, whitewashed cottages, and clear waters", the Lake District is one of England's most-visited National Parks. Set above the lakeside village of Bowness-on-Windermere, the family-run Hillthwaite House Hotel offers pretty views over the lake and the mountains beyond.
Bowness-on-Windermere Pier is 20 minutes' walk from the hotel; from there you can catch a boat to take in the views. Prices start at £8 for an adult cruise ticket. Hill Top, the house Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her books is now a National Trust property and is 30 minutes' drive away. The town of Kendal, best known for its mint cake, is a 20-minute drive. For an idyllic mix of limestone and woodland landscape, Whitbarrow Nature Reserve is around 30 minutes' drive.
Cream tea (served 2-4pm) is popular with locals and guests alike. Views are impressive in the restaurant, and you can dine out on the elevated stone terrace or in the conservatory. In cooler months, guests can cosy up in front of the warming fire with a book and a drink -- there are local ales on tap in the bar, as well as a good selection of spirits and wines.
