Why We Love It

  • Travelzoo members rave about this property, calling it "immaculate" and "spacious" with a "great location"
  • Located within Heavenly Village, a short walk to the gondola, casinos and nightlife
  • Great for groups -- suites sleep at least four people

"The location of this resort is excellent" -- Fodor's

"This was a fantastic value for the price. The resort is adjacent to the very nice gondola plaza with shops, restaurants and the gondola. The free buffet breakfast was great--we were expecting cold/continental type breakfast, but it was a full hot buffet with eggs, bacon, etc. They didn't mind if we took the breakfast back to our room, so I frequently did that in the AM--I got food for our kids while they were getting ready, and we ate it in our kitchenette in the suite. We stored our skiis/boards in the car, and since their parking lot isso close to the gondola, we joked that it was like having a ski locker next to the gondola. Free parking and free wi-fi were a nice plus. Nothing fancy in the room quality--on par with Travel Lodge quality. Very nice and helpful staff. Cute family stuff like board game rentals and movie night, etc. Overall a great value for the price."

Overview

Cozy, laid-back and nestled up against the forest, Forest Suites Resort offers outdoor lovers a year-round escape. “Location is a huge draw,” says Oyster -- pristine natural beauty surrounds guests in every season.

In the winter months, the snow-capped peaks of Heavenly Mountain sit in the hotel’s backyard, and shopping, dining and a movie theater are a few hundred feet away at Heavenly Village. In any season, a ride up the Heavenly Gondola soars right overhead and lends sweeping views of the Squaw Valley. After a day on the slopes, big-name casinos are half a block down the street. When the snow melts and the weather warms, sandy Lakeside Beach is a 15-minute walk away.

Dark wood furnishings and simple, homey décor give the hotel a relaxed mountain-lodge vibe. Standard rooms are basic, but the apartment-style suites are spacious with full kitchens, fireplaces and patios and sleep four to six guests. There is no restaurant on site, but fun seasonal activities include a hot chocolate bar and fire pits for marshmallow roasting in winter and spring. A daily wine and cheese reception is offered throughout the year.

In eco-conscious Tahoe fashion, guests can swap out daily housekeeping for a bottle of wine, and bath products are organic with biodegradable packaging. Wi-Fi, ample covered parking and a breakfast buffet are included with the daily resort fee.

From the press:
  • "The location of this resort is excellent -- 5½ acres bordering a forest, right behind the Heavenly Village, a half block from the casinos, and adjacent to a supermarket, cinema, and shops" -- Fodor's
  • "Location is a huge draw at Forest Suites Resort at Heavenly Village, which is situated about 100 meters from the lifts at Heavenly Village. The hotel, while close to the action of South Lake Tahoe village, is also relatively peaceful and shielded from noise" -- Oyster

The final straw was during checkout we were told we had a balance due of $90 because they failed to charge the full amount when the reservation was made. However, the deal TravelZoo advertised required prepayment in advance for the total amount. Our confirmation indicated payment in full. They neglected to inform us at check in and were extremely rude to us. Additionally, we requested a pool view, which we didn't get; insufficient dishes and for meal preparation. The property was very old, carpets in all main areas looked worn and dirty and many cabinets were missing pull handles.

The location.
Other Comments
The front desk staff was not knowledgeable or informed. The rooms were below standard- not comfortable and not at all updated. There were staff smoking outside our window where our room was above the carport area. Open trash cans in the same area drew bears.

The room quality is on par with a Travel Lodge. The pool was closed for us in winter, but the hot tub was open.

Resort is old and unkept and I was gravely disappointed upon arrival. I had asked for a ground floor room or to be near the elevator since I am physically limited. This request was not honored initially and we had to move all of our stuff (while the bell hop stood and watched without offering assistance to two women traveling alone} and move to another room. The elevator is old and so small that we could not get the luggage cart in. There were huge chunks of wood where people had try to angle the cart into the elevator but we had to unload all of our things into the elevator and emply out again once the door finally closed and we some how got to a third floor after pushing "2".We were truly scared to be riding in an elevator with a door that barely closed and did not even have a close and open button inside the elevator! When we got to the ADA room the temperature was 42 degrees in the room and the lights did not work. By 10pm the temp had risen to 54 degrees (after four hours). When I
