Housed in the historic Tennessee Trust Bank Building, the AAA 4-Diamond Madison Hotel features a sleek look, swanky interiors and a great rooftop lounge in America’s "Blues City."  With 70 rooms and 40 suites, the hotel's Southern hospitality "comes in the form of gracious touches such as roses delivered at turndown" (Travel + Leisure).

"The building is historic, but the rooms are modern, sleek and sexy," reports the Guardian, with contemporary finishes, art deco wallpaper and artwork that pays tribute to the area’s rock 'n' roll history. Rooms also feature flat-panel TVs, in-room Keurig coffeemakers and down comforters. Plush bathrobes and rainfall showerheads come standard, while suites have a separate living room and a jetted tub.

The on-site Eighty3 Food + Drink restaurant is "a go-to for bold, Southern flavors" (Memphis Flyer), while the outdoor patio on the pedestrian-only Main Street allows for some of the best people-watching downtown. The menu features Southern and Creole dishes like the signature skillet cornbread, shrimp and grits and a cider-brined pork chop, while the weekend's Hallelujah Brunch features the likes of "Elvis waffles" with peanut butter sauce, bacon and bananas.

Make sure you venture upstairs to the hip Twilight Sky Terrace, which USAToday's 10Best.com called a "super-chic space with commanding views of the Mississippi." The bar offers cocktails, small plates and seating around an open fire pit, and Lonely Planet calls it “one of the best places in town to watch a sunset." The nightly happy hours can easily turn into late night parties; a DJ spins Thursday-Saturday nights.

Remember to pack your workout gear as the hotel has a gym, recently featured in Men’s Health Magazine, carved out of the 100-year-old bank vault and just recently restocked with new state-of-the-art equipment. Wi-Fi is complimentary throughout the hotel, and guests can arrange for in-room massage or yoga sessions.

Just three blocks away is the mighty Mississippi River and the iconic Beale Street, dotted with blues, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll venues. Sun Studio, where Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash recorded their first hits, is a short tram ride away. Graceland, Presley’s former home and final resting place, is a 20-minute drive.

From the press:

  • "An upscale boutique property offering sumptuous furnishings, first-class service, and rooftop river views" -- Frommer's
  • "Guests and chic locals head to the rooftop garden bar for happy hour against sunset views of downtown Memphis and the Mississippi River" -- Travel + Leisure

Every staff member we saw was beyond pleasant. The only complaint I have is we only saw housekeeping once out of a 3 night stay at that time we asked for towels and did not receive them. My husband called to have them sent up. I did not report this to the desk when we checked out. The breakfast they serve is awesome. I had a different one each of the three mornings we stayed. I believe all were some of the best I have ever eaten. Over all our experience was wonderful

I used to consider this an upscale boutique hotel - however, there were no bath robes, no drinks in fridge, no water, no "cash" food in room (nuts, etc). Bed lumpy, Construction nearby - very loud beginning 4 am, the clock provided did not work and could not be set, no shampoo provided, no lotion provided..What happened to this hotel????

Room was spacious, but showing signs of age. Wallpaper was starting to peel in some areas, toilet stopped working all together one morning. Also, every morning at about 5:30am, we were woken up by sounds of what I think was trash pick up in the alley outside our room. Was so load and obnoxious, especially after just going to bed a few hours before that! Certainly not the hotels fault, but wanted to mention it in case someone ends up in a room overlooking the alley.
