"Charm lifts it a notch above" -- Frommer's

Why We Love It

  • Well-priced, central hotel on the Magnificent Mile in the Near North neighborhood
  • Great location for shopping and walking distance from sites like the John Hancock Observatory
  • This historic property has stylish art-deco touches throughout
  • Stay at the hotel with the famous "Tip-Top-Tap" sign

Overview

Towering over the Magnificent Mile in the Near North neighborhood, the Allerton is a well-priced, central option for an urban getaway. Its location on Chicago’s main shopping avenue puts it within a five-minute walk of top attractions, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art and the John Hancock Observatory. A 15-minute stroll will bring you across the Chicago River to Millennium Park and Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate sculpture (aka "The Bean").

Built in the 1920s, the hotel’s traditional interiors have recently been given a boutique makeover. Art deco influences are still apparent in the velvet armchairs and shiny side tables, and the color scheme is bright. Hang out in the cozy lobby and check your emails over a free coffee, which is available 7-11 a.m.

The restaurant serves breakfast until 11 a.m., followed by a lunch of classic food, such as Cobb salads and Reuben sandwiches. Drop by the lounge in the evening for signature martinis and small bites before hitting the restaurants in neighboring Streeterville. Although there’s no pool, the hotel does have a small 24-hour gym on site, and it’s four blocks to the river or lake for waterfront runs.

Chic and contemporary, the Standard rooms come with queen beds and can be a little tight on space. Upgrade to a king bed or opt for an executive room -- they have separate living areas and some have views of the Magnificent Mile. The area can occasionally be noisy, so if possible, we'd recommend requesting a higher room to avoid being disturbed by street noise.

From the press:
  • "Standard rooms are by no means large (and the 'classic' rooms are downright tiny), but they can be a bargain off-peak" -- Lonely Planet
  • "If you want to stay in a place in the middle of it all, this is a very good choice" -- Fodor’s
  • "A historic hotel that's gotten a stylish modern makeover, the Allerton's charm lifts it a notch above the standard business-traveler hangout" -- Frommer’s

Well first of all we were there a little early, but the gentleman at front desk (Jaime) took my phone number and said he would call us when a room was available not as soon as we walk out my phone rings it's him stating they had several rooms available. We return get our room key go up to the 22nd floor open the door and the room is not ready but here's the best part there was a couple still in there, REALLY. So we go back downstairs tell them they laugh and apologize and give us another room, not what we expected it was a business room. This just put a bad taste of what else to expect, so we go at 5 for happy hour on the second floor of hotel we sit bartender comes up to us and asks what we want he looked like his pants were on fire with a rushing effect, he leaves us comes back and says are you ready I was but not my wife so he leaves again brings back my order but couldn't wait for my wife's. So after we both had a drink we left so much for happy hour more sad and pathetic minutes.

I would highly recommend this hotel for a solo traveler or couple. The rooms are nice but very small and hard to share. The location is perfect.

The hotel was great, especially considering they had NO reservation confirmed from you when we got there, even after we showed them our paperwork confirmation from you to us! They did, however, get us a room. We will NEVER book with you again.
