Why We Love This Hotel

  • Sawrey House Hotel is in the Lake District National Park, less than 10 minutes' drive from the medieval village of Hawkshead
  • The dining room offers views across Esthwaite Water and the surrounding fells
  • The National Trust recommends this property as one of the best places to stay near Hill Top, Beatrix Potter's former farmhouse home, which is next door
  • Lake Windermere is a 5-minute drive away, and Bowness-on-Windermere is a 15-minute drive away via the car ferry

Sawrey House Hotel is a 19th-century property in Near Sawrey, a Lake District village between Hawkshead and Lake Windermere. Surrounded by National Trust-owned land, and looking out over Esthwaite Water and Grizedale Forest, it’s a great base for walkers.

The hotel is next door to Hill Top. This 17th-century farmhouse is the former home of Beatrix Potter, and was where she wrote many of her much-loved children’s stories. The property is now a National Trust-owned museum and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Lake District.

Lake Windermere is a 5-minute drive away, or a little over half an hour on foot. You can also reach the town of Bowness-on-Windermere -- home to the World of Beatrix Potter Museum -- in around 15 minutes via the car ferry at Far Sawrey.

Ambleside is a 20-minute drive from the hotel. "Ringed by fells, it's a favourite base for hikers, with a cluster of outdoors shops and plenty of cosy pubs and cafes providing fuel for adventures", says Lonely Planet.

Facilities at the hotel include a cosy bar, where the open fire will keep you warm in winter, and a candlelit dining room, where you can dine on classic English dishes made with local ingredients. There's also a lounge where you can relax with a drink or afternoon tea while enjoying the countryside views through the large picture windowsWe've negotiated an afternoon tea for two, for £19.

Rooms are individually designed, and vary in shape and size depending on which part of the hotel they are in. Classic Rooms are spread over all three floors, and have views of the hotel grounds and surrounding fells, while the higher-category Lake View Rooms are on the first and second floors and offer elevated views of Esthwaite Water. Note: there is no lift at the hotel.

The location is simply stunning with wide open commanding views and tantalising glimpses of Esthwater due to it having been built on a rise. The beds are super king-size and extremely comfortable and the food quite superb; nouvelle cuisine but sensible portions. Restaurant prices are very competitive making it a place to stop for dinner at even if not staying overnight. We may very well be back so that we can explore the area further and Sawrey House would be the main contender for overnighting at.
Other Comments
The only 'contentious'issue and one that is common to many places is the use of music. The question is when does 'background' music become intrusive. Though we would prefer none we recognise that some people appreciate it so a compromise would be to keep the volume low.
