Why We Love This Hotel

  • Durker Roods Hotel is three miles from the Peak District National Park, making it a great base for walkers
  • The hotel was the former home of Sir David Brown, who owned Aston Martin and after whom the DB series of cars were named
  • The manor dates back to 1870 -- expect traditional British décor, including original fireplaces and chandeliers

Durker Roods Hotel is in the picturesque West Yorkshire village of Meltham, on the doorstep of the Peak District National Park.

The manor house dates back to 1870 and was once the private residence of Huddersfield entrepreneur Sir David Brown, who owned Aston Martin from 1946-1972, and after whom the famous DB series of cars is named. The building has maintained many of its original features, with traditional décor -- including fireplaces and chandeliers -- complemented by contemporary comforts such as free Wi-Fi. There’s also a modern restaurant serving traditional British cuisine for lunch and dinner.

The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Holmfirth, which has a selection of shops and tea rooms. Tours and wine-tasting sessions are available at the award-winning Holmfirth Vineyard. Shibden Hall & Park, EUREKA! National Children's Museum, Kirklees Light Railway and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park are all around 30 minutes' drive away.

For a day trip, the Brontë Parsonage Museum in pretty Haworth, Royal Armouries Leeds, Harewood House, the Emmerdale Studio Experience, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and York Racecourse are all around an hour's drive from the hotel.

The countryside surrounding the hotel has featured in numerous British TV series and films, including "Happy Valley", "Emmerdale" and "Last of the Summer Wine", much of which was filmed in Holmfirth. There's now a museum and an open-top bus tour to showcase the famous locations from the TV series.

The area is prime hiking territory, with some of the Peak District's most famous walks within a 10-minute drive of the hotel. After a day of exploring, you can enjoy the views across the rolling hills from the hotel bar, lounge or outdoor beer garden.

The staff were all friendly. The food was good. A daily special was offered on the menu but unavailable as the kitchen staff were new and trying to sort out new menus. Lovely setting.

Because we had a dog, we were put into the disabled room. We were told a lady had an accident in there the previous week - hence no curtains at window, blinds were broken. The shower was pathetic, a mere dribble and tepid at best. As the hotel was busy, the self service dining room was full so we ate breakfast by ourselves in the bar (with the TV on and piped music playing at the same time!) We had to go between rooms to collect our breakfast, hot food on stone cold plates, no one came to check if we were ok.. All things that would be easy to address.

A beautiful hotel in an excellent location to explore the Pennines and Northern Peak District. Excellent location. Breakfast and dinners were amazing with portions to feed even the hungriest guest.

Yes. The food was good.

There would be more atmosphere in a funeral home. Dark and unwelcoming reception desk . Same in the bar. Breakfast seating was a shambles. No blinds in the bedroom. No towel rail in bathroom, just holes where it should have been. Shower leaked onto floor. Wee bit Faulty Towers.

Everything was excellent apart from the afternoon tea. We asked for one to be low sugar and this did not happen. I spoke to the Chef on the day and he did not know about my request. I had especially spoken to the hotel twice about it to make sure days before we arrived. Communication is obviously not a priority.
Other Comments
Staff were friendly and very helpful. It was very good value and food was good. Communication with the Chef is lacking re low sugar request on afternoon tea and no low sugar desserts on menu however on our first evening chef did do a fresh fruit plate for my dessert.

Unfortunately had to leave early as wife had a poorly leg. We enjoyed our stay and were well looked after. Surprised at the extensive menu which went down very well. Worth going for the food.

Just got back from Durker Roods Hotel with offer and all I can say is what a great deal we stayed fro 2 nights bed breakast and one evening meal . The room looked refurbished and was spacious and v ery clean and comfy the only issue was poor water pressure the ther shower but I suppose the pressure is what it is . Breakfast and dinner were both very nice with choice on the dinner menu -recommend the lobster ravioli .High tea was also included which was huge with sandwiches , cakes and scones .Meltham is quite a large place with shops and restaurants around but we ate both nights at the hotel as prices were reasonable , selection good and potions generous .All the staff were very friendly and polite
