"On arrival we had to complain about only given a time slot of 6:00pm or 6:30 pm for evening meal, eventually agreed to last slot of 7:30pm! Room was clean and adequate with usual facilities. Evening meal & cooked breakfast was OK. Bar area was closed during the daytime for decoration which left seating dirty when opened in the evening. Overall not bad for the price."

Why We Love This Hotel

  • Durker Roods Hotel is three miles from the Peak District National Park, making it a great base for walkers
  • The hotel was the former home of Sir David Brown, who owned Aston Martin and after whom the DB series of cars were named
  • The manor dates back to 1870 -- expect traditional British décor, including original fireplaces and chandeliers

Durker Roods Hotel is in the picturesque West Yorkshire village of Meltham, on the doorstep of the Peak District National Park.

The manor house dates back to 1870 and was once the private residence of Huddersfield entrepreneur Sir David Brown, who owned Aston Martin from 1946-1972, and after whom the famous DB series of cars is named. The building has maintained many of its original features, with traditional décor -- including fireplaces and chandeliers -- complemented by contemporary comforts such as free Wi-Fi. There’s also a modern restaurant serving traditional British cuisine for lunch and dinner.

The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Holmfirth, which has a selection of shops and tea rooms. Tours and wine-tasting sessions are available at the award-winning Holmfirth Vineyard. Shibden Hall & Park, EUREKA! National Children's Museum, Kirklees Light Railway and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park are all around 30 minutes' drive away.

For a day trip, the Brontë Parsonage Museum in pretty Haworth, Royal Armouries Leeds, Harewood House, the Emmerdale Studio Experience, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and York Racecourse are all around an hour's drive from the hotel.

The countryside surrounding the hotel has featured in numerous British TV series and films, including "Happy Valley", "Emmerdale" and "Last of the Summer Wine", much of which was filmed in Holmfirth. There's now a museum and an open-top bus tour to showcase the famous locations from the TV series.

The area is prime hiking territory, with some of the Peak District's most famous walks within a 10-minute drive of the hotel. After a day of exploring, you can enjoy the views across the rolling hills from the hotel bar, lounge or outdoor beer garden.

Pleasant staff but, No wifi in rooms, no shelf in bathroom & shower floor extremely slippery, toilet seat adrift. Needs a bit more attention to detail.

Lovely staff, great food, nice room but the bathroom needs attention. Fixed shower way too high for a short person like me. No shelf to put things on. Very cheap and nasty toilet seat and the toilet didn't flush properly - took two or three goes to flush it properly.

The only criticism which is only a small one is that I thought the crockery could of been cleaner as I know it probably is washed in dishwasher but left stains in cups.

Food was excellent - though huge portions! Breakfast really fresh and lovely. Could have had some more interesting décor, saying that, it was nice that it wasn't contrived.

Couldn't understand why it was so quiet at this time of year but under new management. Hopefully word will get out that the food is excellent and locals will start visiting it.
