cathedral", "huge castle" and "cobweb of hilly, cobbled streets" (Lonely Planet) is, 40 minutes' drive away. Newcastle's buzzing city centre takes around 50 minutes to reach by car from the hotel.

The hotel has a bar serving cocktails and light bites and a grill restaurant offering hearty dishes and afternoon tea. The hotel occupies a grand Victorian building overlooking the market square and a modern building with an entrance on Priestgate.

Other Comments
Bathroom, although it looked good, was completely impractical - very low toilet (more like a bidet) with square seat (uncomfortable) and no lid, no toilet roll holder, only shelf for shaving gear and toiletries not near the sink, shower slippery and dangerous and shower screen too small to prevent water showering into main part of bathroom. Shower controls too far away from shower itself.
