Perched halfway up Troutbeck valley in the Lake District, The Mortal Man Inn is a traditional country pub-with-rooms that dates back to the 17th century and boasts "glorious views" (The Daily Telegraph) over Lake Windermere.

With the Lake District National Park right on its doorstep, the property is "geared to lovers of the outdoors" (The Daily Telegraph). There are plenty of nearby walking routes -- taking in Helvellyn, High Street the Langdale Pikes -- and you can borrow maps from reception. Dogs are also welcome (fees apply).

Ambleside and Windermere are around 15 minutes' drive from the inn, while Grasmere and Coniston are around 30 minutes' drive away.

The cosy bar has open log fires and serves pub food and real ales all day. You can expect evening entertainment on some days, such as poetry readings, folk music and open-mic nights, and there are board games, darts, cards and chess for rainy days. In fine weather, head out to the large beer garden for a great view over Windermere.

Rooms are "modern but modest" (The Daily Telegraph) and are on the first and second floors. Wi-Fi is free.

Having booked a fantastic deal from Travelzoo we would have been just as happy to have paid twice as much. The place is full of character with a nice pub area which has an open fire. Our room was large and comfortable, with an en-suite, nicely furnished and with views down the valley to Windermere. The garden is lovely and shares the fantastic views. We enjoyed the food that we ordered on both nights and the continental breakfast was ample for us. The staff were efficient and friendly. Good selection of real ales and cider. We hope to revisit.
