The Charles Cotton Hotel is in the village of Hartington, which is renowned for its blue cheeses and its links with poet and writer Charles Cotton, after whom the hotel is name. The hotel sits in the lush valley of the River Dove in Derbyshire and is 25 minutes' drive from Chatsworth House.

The hotel is 20 minutes' drive from the spa town of Buxton -- "a confection of Georgian terraces, Victorian amusements and parks" (Lonely Planet). Poole's Cavern, a 2-million-year-old natural limestone cave, is also 20 minutes' drive away.

Alton Towers theme park is 35 minutes' drive away.

There are three cycling and hiking routes that pass within 10 minutes' drive of the hotel -- the 13-mile Tissington Trail, the 17-mile High Peak Trail and the 8-mile Manifold Way Cycle Trail.

The weather was particularly bad and the staff were under alot of pressure. They did their best in the circumstances.

We paid extra for a dog room . The room was not very clean especially the bathroom and had a rather unpleasant smell. We decided not to stay for the second night.

The staff and food are great. The room was very cold and basic, even for a dog friendly room. I expect higher standard.

The hotel has been taken over since our last visit. The bar area has been revamped and is lovely. Steve the manager is a real asset to the hotel. Nothing is too much trouble and the staff were fabulous.

We enjoyed our dinner and breakfast, although half a mushroom for the breakfast was a little on the stingy side! The value was overall quite good despite not living quite up to the advertised offer.

Our Travelzoo deal was for two nights stay, breakfast and a bottle of Prosecco in the room. We arrived at 4.30pm to be told that our room was not ready (they had people working on the heating in). We were shown the bar but not offered a drink, so we purchased drinks. We checked a little later as we could see people were being given rooms and were informed ours was now ready and we could check in. The manager handed us two miniature bottles of Prosecco at reception and said we weren't to drink these in the bar... we found this a little strange as we'd expected a proper bottle of Prosecco in the room with some glasses and a wine cooler at the least but we weren't sure if it was to make up for the lack of room on time. It wasn't. There was no Prosecco in the room so we'd been given two miniature bottles instead! The manager was pretty rude to his staff member who was on her first day. He instructed her to show us to our room but she didn't even know where the rooms were as she was so new and obviously hadn't been trained properly. We felt really awkward for her. We decided to book a meal at the hotel on our second night. This was fine and the manager seemed more pleasant and sorted out our request fine. We really enjoyed our dinner and asked to put the bill on our room number. On check-out the next morning, we found the bill to be wrong as an extra dessert and wine were added. The manager seemed really frustrated at this and externalised that he'd lost out on payment for this. Again, we felt rather awkward. It wasn't our fault that something had gone wrong with the order taking and payment in the restaurant. Nonetheless, we got the bill rectified, paid and left feeling a bit like it was an experience from Fawlty Towers! Just quickly re: our room. It was large and the bathroom was fine but (as mentioned by others) we found the lack of phone reception and WiFi a bit of an issue - I was worried about family members being able to get hold of me. They could benefit from a WiFi extension. The other issue was the noise from upstairs - I'd recommend requesting an upstairs room.
