More lighting on the stairs in the annexe would be good. Paintwork in the function room needs attention. Music repetitive. Noise insulation in room 17 where the hot water boiler is held. Heating was adequate. Food was nice.

Nice hotel, but a little tired decor etc. Rooms clean but accessed by several steep stair flights not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. Food in the restaurant very good ( the rack of lamb exceptional) breakfast not much on offer aside from cooked breakfast just 3/4 cereals ( croissants on the menu but apparently not on offer?) .

The staff were friendly, the bed very comfortable and the room well appointed, despite its other failings.
The main building is attractive and the location excellent.

The break was advertised at £99 but that turned out to be without VAT.
Although dogless we were accommodated in a dog friendly room without being told that it was therefore uncarpeted and in an annexe. It was so gloomy that we needed the lights on all the time. There was an electric heater to combat the fact that it was also cold, but the main heating was off, which included the towel rail. One of the bedside lamps didn't work and the TV remote had lost its battery cover and the batteries were flat.
They were advertising their steak night on our first evening so we had that, only to find that the steaks were tough and gristly.
On the second night we had an excellent meal in the hotel across the road and returned about 9:30 to find the Charles Cotton in complete darkness, all the outer doors locked and no staff left on the premises. Had I not forgotten to hand in the key to our annexe room as we went out we would have been locked out, as some of our fellow guests in the main building were.

The staff were all very friendly & helpful but some training is needed e.g. we were given 2 different sized glasses although we shared the same bottle of wine. Presentation of wine seems to consist of placing an unopened, "screw top" bottle of wine on the table, without any enquiry as to correct bottle, nor any offer to taste before acceptance.
We were not informed that the bar and dining rooms would be closed on Thursday evening, nor that an entry code would be required for entry to the hotel before 11 pm on that day.
A sheet informed us that an entry code was needed to gain access to the hotel after 11 pm but people were not informed that the code was needed to gain entry to the hotel before then on that date. We were staying in "The Cottage" so had no problem ourselves but had to inform 6 people of the code number so that they could gain access to the hotel - 2 people at approx. 8.30 pm and the remaining 4 at approximately 10 pm.

Unfortunately on the day of arrival the hot water decided to stop working, so we had to have cold showers to get the travel grim off. We and others advised the bar staff of this and were told that the boiler had been reset and it was working. Next morning no hot water. At 07:30 my wife when to reception to find out what was going on and found nobody in the hotel and it was all locked up. My wife tried again at 08:00 and found the breakfast supervisor who had to cook a reduced breakfast as the chef did not turn in and nobody could get the cooking range to work. The manager was conspicuous by his absence. The staff that did arrive held the fort very well. We did not stay for the second night as nobody could guarantee that the hot water would be working. The lady that did the cooking checked us out and advised that no charge would be made to our credit card. We would return assuming the hot water and the breakfasts could be guaranteed.

The staff showed no interest in you because we booked through travel zoo and did not book direct ? On arrival we asked if we could book a table for evening meal . The lady said if you would have booked direct we would have discussed if you would like evening meal . So we can not fit you in their is a pub across the road or one down the road . The room was a mish mash of colour scuff marks and stains on walls . Badly stained old furniture. Toilets did not flush properly.staff did not listen to your requirements. Simply asked for no beans on my breakfast, but it came out with beans , did not make a fuss I just left them .
