The Blackburn Inn sits in the heart of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, in historical Staunton. The property, built in 1828 by Thomas Jefferson protégé Thomas R. Blackburn, still features original architectural elements such as arched doorways, vaulted ceilings and fireplaces in select guest rooms.

The inn offers a classic American look with red brick, whitewashed wood trim and light-filled hallways; however, rooms are modern in style and very spacious. Bathrooms are beautifully appointed with barn-style doors and rain showers. Select rooms offer soaking bathtubs. All rooms feature mobile-key access, Wi-Fi, coffeemakers and mini-fridges. A light European breakfast is complimentary, as is a glass of sparkling wine upon check-in.

The on-site restaurant, Second Draft, features locally sourced dishes and some of Virginia's best wines, beers and ciders. On good-weather days, guests can enjoy bites and drinks from the property's large wraparound front porch, or take the spiral staircase up to the rooftop cupola for breathtaking views of the grounds and downtown Staunton.

The city of Staunton, birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson, is a charming small town with a big arts culture. Be sure to stroll through the in-house art gallery, which showcases the works of local artists. Guests looking to sample some of Virginia's best microbrews can explore the breweries along the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail, many located within an hour's drive of the inn. Guests also have access to the full-service fitness center. This hotel offers dog-friendly rooms and treats your furry friends to complimentary bowls, beds and treats.

The staff was friendly and attentive. We had drinks and dinner on the veranda of the Second Draft House bistro at the hotel and the food was delicious. We'd definitely come again.

Lovely cozy room with excellent features . .. lots of plug-ins near the beds, great lighting, big tv, very nice bathroom. The room wasn't huge, but it was more than adequate. Very comfortable bed & bedding.

Staff wasn’t helpful, welcoming or helpful. Upon check in I wasn’t told anything about the hotel nor told about breakfast or the restaurant. When I went down that evening for wine, I had to ask the server for a menu and was barely acknowledged. Very unfortunate, as I’m a frequent traveler to the area for work and would have been a frequent patron.

I didn't realize that it was used for several other things before it became a hotel. It was cool but a little different than expected upon arrival. Maybe my error for snagging the deal without doing research. I will return, maybe even stay longer. I didn't get to partake in the lawn activities, maybe I was supposed to ask, but there was no promotion of said activities. I liked that it wasn't the normal busy hotel, but that also made it feel a little spooky too. Very clean, off the beaten path which was fine. The main grounds were beautifully manicured and pristine. For 80 acres, I was a bit confused as to the no trespass signs, the adjacent buildings and just stayed off campus exploring the surrounding area for fulfillment. I scored it high, it has pros and cons. Wasn't a standard hotel with pools and such, but has a draw for relaxed and secludedness with historical charm and a modern flavor.

We loved everything from the historic buildings and grounds to the comfy bed and linens. Though we didn't have dinner at the restaurant, we enjoyed the BBQ flatbread and a couple of local brews.
