"Will take your breath away" -- Gayot

Why We Love It

  • 16th-century-style, French-influenced property in the countryside, located 45 minutes north of Atlanta
  • Active winery showcases Georgia grapes and has won more than 200 awards
  • Foodie haven: Six on-site restaurants
  • Boasts hiking trails, tennis courts, pools, spa and multiple golf courses

More than half a million visitors a year head to the romantic Chateau Élan, flamboyantly styled like a French estate and just a 45-minute drive from Atlanta. Its 3,500 picturesque, verdant acres are covered in grapes, which feed the property's working winery. Executive winemaker Simone Bergese has won more than 60 awards while working for well-known wineries including Firriato Winery in Sicily -- and Chateau Élan itself has earned more than 200 awards.

Six restaurants cater to foodies of all types, offering farm-to-table Southern cuisine, hearty Italian dining, fresh Mediterranean seafood, elegant French classics, and Irish comfort food (served in a pub that was built in Ireland and shipped piece-by-piece to Georgia). Cooking classes and demonstrations are hosted in the Viking Culinary Studio. There are also 63 holes of championship golf, an outdoor Olympic-sized pool with Jacuzzi, a fitness center, seven tennis courts, an equestrian center and a full-service spa with more than 30 treatment rooms and an indoor heated pool.

On view during the guided tours of the winery are the crushing and pressing machines, oak barrels used to age and flavor the wines, the cask room and the bottling area. The interior of the building houses a gallery with monthly exhibits by regional and national artists, displays of antique European wine-making equipment and a wine market.

From the press:
  • "Château Élan does indeed pack quite a punch with the amenities it provides" -- U.S. News & World Report
  • "Feels as if it belongs in another world: the pastoral, Impressionists' world of Southern France, to be precise" -- Gayot

The setting at the pool area is fantastic.

The restaurants were of poor quality. Paddy's brought us both the wrong dish. The pasta at Versailles was crazy salty. The winery did not have the item on the menu that we ordered on two different days. The room had a toilet seat that banged our knuckles repeatedly and a shower door blocked by the bathroom door. Workout area is very minimal.

The experience was good and we are glad we went but will not go back again. They call themselves a resort and charge 35.00 a day for a resort fee. The only ammentity they have is a pool. Wine Tasting, Golf and The Spa is full price for overnight guests. I am confused on what the resort fee was actually supposed to cover. The food, wine, golf and spa is overpriced for the value. If you like their wine, you can purchase it at Publix across the street for a few dollars less per bottle.

The first view of the property when driving up to the entrance is stunning. Also the bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in at any hotel.

Great experience. It feels like you are in a city far away from Atlanta. Good food. Several amenities (large pool, live music, spa, fitness center). We couldn't have asked for a better getaway.
