The rolling Slieve Blue Mountain landscape, ideal for walking, cycling and fishing expeditions, surrounds Kinnitty Castle, which offers “atmospheric” accommodation on a “vast estate” (Lonely Planet). Set on 650 acres of parkland, the hotel occupies an imposing neo-Gothic castle founded in the 13th century, accessed via a winding avenue and located a few minutes’ drive from Kinnitty village centre. Both the “heritage town” of Birr “with its tree-lined malls and well-preserved houses” (Fodor’s), and Leap Castle “reputedly one of the most haunted castles in Europe” are a 15-minute drive away, whilst Tullamore D.E.W. Visitor Centre, offering tours of the whiskey distillery, is 30 minutes’ drive from the hotel. The centres of Galway “known for its festivals, music and bars” (Rough Guide) and “cosmopolitan” (Lonely Planet) Dublin both take around 90 minutes to reach by car.
Kinnitty Castle’s interiors have a suitably grand feel, characterised by wood-panelled walls and period furnishings, and featuring a lobby staircase lined with gilt-framed portraits and topped with suits of armour. There’s a stately bar with bookcases, a log fire and a grand piano, as well as a rustic-style pub for drinks, snacks and regular live music. Guests can enjoy fine dining in the elegant restaurant with views of the grounds and stroll in the 60 acres of lush lawns. In-room beauty treatments are available for a fee.
The hotel’s 37 traditional guestrooms are TV free and offer antique-style furniture and rich fabrics, along with distinct design features such as exposed-brick walls, fireplaces and wood-beamed ceilings. Higher tariff rooms and suites add details including roll top baths, living areas and 4-poster beds, along with views of the grounds.
