"Indulge in the luxury of Haida Gwaii's natural beauty at Ocean House" -- The Globe and Mail

Why We Love It

  • It's floating in a sheltered bay surrounded by unspoiled beaches, ancient villages and old-growth rainforests
  • With a focus on preserving its indigenous heritage and untouched land, this brand new eco-cultural resort is 100% Haida owned
  • Though remote, there are “unexpectedly luxurious touches” like free Wi-Fi, a theatre, steam room, spa treatments and on-site fine dining (USA Today)
  • Haida Gwaii was chosen by Frommer’s as one of the “Best Places to Go in 2017”

This secluded part of the world, an archipelago of 450 islands located 80 kilometres off British Columbia’s coast, has been nicknamed “Canada's Galápagos” – mostly due to its overwhelming amount of exclusive plant and marine wildlife. Here, where culture and nature are one, the Haida people have protected the trees and water since time immemorial. A “truly unique wilderness,” the area is home to bald eagles, bears and, offshore in marine-protected waters, sea lions, whales and orcas (Frommer’s). “A magical trip for those who make the effort” (Lonely Planet), the ultra-remote area was visited by Prince William and Princess Kate in 2016, who “darn it all, let the secret slip” (Frommer’s).

Among the 137 smaller islands at the southern end of Haida Gwaii is the National Park and Conservation Area where the village at S’Gang Gwaay lies -- the only UNESCO World Heritage site wholly in British Columbia. This ancient site features some of the last true examples of a west coast First Nation’s village and (as the Haida believe in the natural process of decay) in time the remainder of the majestic totems here will be returned to earth. Access is by boat or plane only and can be arranged through the resort.

Floating in the secluded bay of Peel Inlet, the intimate fly-in wilderness lodge has just opened its doors in 2018. There are 12 cozy rooms, all culturally rich and modern in décor, with Haida-inspired fabrics and clean-lined furniture. Local art can be viewed throughout the resort -- there's even a resident artist whom guests are free to meet when available.

Though considered an off-the-grid retreat, there's certainly no seclusion from luxurious amenities. Think spa treatments amid the tranquility of a floating lodge and on-site dining with water views from floor-to-ceiling windows -- here, the resident chef creates locally inspired dishes utilizing the area’s fresh seafood and seasonal fruits and vegetables. In addition, guests will have full use of the resort’s kayaks and stand-up paddleboards; while inside there is free Wi-Fi, a theatre, library, bar and lounge, plus a gift shop with a focus on local art and products.
