Overview

Built in 1815, the Snapdragon Inn was once the private home of Maxwell Perkins, editor to Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe. Today, the brick colonial mansion on Main Street has been reborn as an inn with nine guest rooms.

Each room is individually decorated with a pastel palette and antique furnishings. Rooms feature king or queen beds with down comforters, free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs; some accommodations include fireplaces and seating areas. The private bathrooms have clawfoot soaking tubs, heated floors and L’Occitane toiletries.

In the morning, guests are treated to continental breakfast in the dining room, and complimentary tea and coffee service is available throughout the day. Guests can book facials and massages at the small on-site spa or unwind by the library’s fireplace with one of the books edited by the home’s former owner.

The inn is adjacent to Paradise Park, a nature preserve with a lake, jogging trails and diverse species for bird-watching. From its Main Street address, the inn is a 5-minute walk from Windsor Village Historic District and a 5-minute drive to Harpoon Brewery and the Simon Pearce glass-blowing plant. The surrounding area is popular year-round with outdoor enthusiasts who come to golf, mountain-bike, dog-sled and fish.

Wonderful week-end getaway to Vermont. Loved the Inn. Walking distance to restaurants. Beautiful lake with trails bordering the property and just minutes to harpoon brewery. Of course, a soak in the claw foot tub was irresistible. Breakfast was perfect whether you wish to eat healthfully or splurge on yummy home made waffles. Great place to stay.

Would have been even more enjoyable during a warmer time of year, but timing was our choice. Good news during early Spring is lack of traffic and shopping crowds

As a writer and Hemingway aficionado I welcomed walking in his footsteps. Lovely cookies!

I very much appreciated the warmth of the communication before our arrival that included recommendations for dinner (more on that later). When we arrived around 7pm we found our hosts had heated our room, for which we were grateful, however we were never able to get the room to a cool enough temperature to enjoy a comfortable night's sleep, despite turning the radiator off and opening the windows (which fell out when we opened them; we had quite a struggle to get them back in!). The bed itself contributed to our over-heating problem. we discovered in the morning it had an innerspring mattress with a feather topper (that didn't quite fit) covered with a plastic-backed mattress protector; no wonder we felt like we were sleeping on a heating pad! After our first restless night we decided to remove both the cover and the topper and just sleep on the mattress for the second night. That worked much better, phew! Our hosts had recommended the converted railway station across the road for dinner. We enjoyed the ambience but the food was ordinary - do not order the risotto, it was tasteless, sloppy porridge! And don't go to Bentley's in Woodstock, surly service of over-priced pub grub. Go instead to the Worthy Kitchen in Woodstock or to Molly's in Hanover, both brilliant!
