Overview

Set across three Victorian townhouses in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the 4-star Cranley Hotel is an intimate property with only 39 rooms and a quintessentially English feel. Friendly staff greet guests with a welcome drink and deliver free baked treats to your room at turndown.

You'll be surrounded by some of London's most popular attractions -- Hyde Park, the Science Museum, the Royal Albert Hall and the Natural History Museum -- and there are numerous shopping opportunities and restaurants nearby.

There are two Tube stations within 10 minutes' walk: South Kensington and Gloucester Road, both of which connect to Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and the theatres of the West End in 15 minutes.

The bedrooms are a good size, with high ceilings, huge windows and antique furniture. Some bathrooms are a tad small (not uncommon in London's historical buildings). Superior Rooms feature handmade queen-sized canopied beds, while Executive Rooms offer king Beaudesert beds. Wi-Fi is free, DVD players are available on request and there are umbrellas to borrow when the weather takes a decidedly British turn.

In the evenings, retire to the pretty lounge for a complimentary glass of bubbly and canapés (7-8pm). Guests can snuggle up by an open fire here in winter. There is no restaurant on site but there's an honesty bar in the lounge and 24-hour room service is available. Breakfast can be taken in the lobby, or in bed at no extra charge.

Lots of shortcomings. Eg lamps not working, water had been opened and used by previous guests, no bathrobes/slippers as stated in the facilities for our room etc

We had to wait 2 hours at reception for our room (check in was supposed to be at 2pm, we arrived at 3.30, and didn't get to our room til 5.30pm). I had pre-arranged an upgrade (paid for in addition to the offer price) and the upgraded room was not available as late check-out had been given to the previous guests, and then the room had to be cleaned etc

The buildings themselves are fantastic. We were upgraded and the Four poster room was superb. The only thing that lets the hotel down is the lack of staff. There are no facilities to make Tea or Coffee in the room, but they are offered complimentary through room service. However, twice we asked for room service and on both occasions we had to wait longer than expected as there were not enough staff to prepare or deliver the items. The intention of the room service is good, but as I say, they do need more staff to provide the service more efficiently. On balance though, this is a small grumble and not one that would stop me from going back.
